1. SAP BASIS Manager

Purpose

The SAP BASIS Manager is accountable for the overall stability, availability, performance and security of the multiple SAP instances that comprise the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) SAP environment. The role provides technical leadership across the SAP technology stack (SAP ECC 6.0 / S/4HANA, SAP Solution Manager and associated components running on HANA, IBM DB2 and Oracle databases on the AIX operating system), and directs the team of SAP Basis Specialists supporting TNPA’s port operations across its eight (8) commercial seaports.

The incumbent sets the technical direction for the SAP landscape, owns the system-management and technical-governance processes, and ensures that Basis services meet the agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in support of TNPA’s digital journey and business objectives.

Responsibilities

• Lead, plan and manage all SAP Basis administration activities across the TNPA SAP landscape, including production, quality-assurance, development and sandbox instances.
• Own the SAP technical roadmap – plan and oversee system installations, upgrades, enhancement packs, kernel and support-pack updates, and migrations (including ECC to S/4HANA readiness).
• Direct system-copy, client administration and transport-management strategies and enforce a controlled change-and-transport landscape.
• Manage database administration and performance across HANA, DB2 and Oracle, including capacity planning, tuning and housekeeping in conjunction with the DBA and Basis Specialists.
• Ensure robust backup, restore and disaster-recovery capability, and schedule and validate periodic restore and DR testing.
• Oversee SAP security at the Basis layer, patch and security-upgrade planning, and ongoing compliance with control checks and audit requirements.
• Manage monitoring of critical resources (CCMS / Solution Manager), proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, and drive root-cause analysis of major incidents.
• Coordinate the work of SAP Basis Specialists, allocate tasks, review deliverables and mentor the technical team.
• Maintain complete system documentation for all SAP instances and interfaces and provide regular status reporting to the ICT Contract Manager and management.
• Manage relationships with SAP, hosting and third-party vendors and escalate and follow through on OSS / incident messages.
• Contribute to ICT technical governance, ensuring Basis activities align with TNPA policies, standards and the National Treasury / regulatory framework.

Position Challenges

• Maintaining high availability of business-critical SAP systems that underpin 24/7 port operations.
• Managing a heterogeneous database and operating-system landscape (HANA, DB2, Oracle on AIX) with differing tuning and maintenance demands.
• Balancing continuous operational support (BAU) against upgrade, patching and S/4HANA transformation initiatives with minimal business disruption.
• Planning and executing maintenance within limited operational change windows.

Decision Making

• Determine the technical approach for upgrades, migrations, refreshes and system-copy activities within the agreed change-management framework.
• Approve Basis-level configuration, transport routes and security settings, and take go/no-go decisions on scheduled technical changes.
• Advise management and steering committees on SAP technical strategy, capacity investment, risk and cost implications.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree / National Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
• SAP BASIS / NetWeaver certification.
• Minimum of 8–10 years’ SAP Basis experience, including a minimum of 3–5 years in a lead / management capacity.
• Proven experience in SAP installations, upgrades, migrations, troubleshooting, recovery and performance management.
• Experience of SAP S/4HANA and HANA database administration is a strong advantage.
• Project Management qualification (e.g. PMI-PMP / PRINCE2) or demonstrable project leadership experience is advantageous.

Skills Required

• In-depth knowledge of SAP ECC 6.0 / S/4HANA, SAP Solution Manager and the SAP NetWeaver technology stack.
• Administration of IBM DB2, SAP HANA and Oracle databases.
• AIX / UNIX operating-system administration and Tivoli Storage Management (or equivalent backup tooling).
• Strong leadership, planning and stakeholder-management skills.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting ability.
• Strong written, oral and presentation skills and the ability to handle highly confidential information in a strictly professional manner.
