Job description

About the Firm : We are a growing accounting and financial services practice providing accounting, bookkeeping, payroll and statutory compliance services to a diverse portfolio of businesses across various industries. As our client base continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced and hands-on Accountant to join our team and take responsibility for the day-to-day accounting and financial administration of our clients.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with multiple clients, managing their own workload and taking ownership of accounting deliverables within a professional practice environment.

About the Role

The successful candidate will work directly with the firm's clients and will be responsible for maintaining their accounting records and ensuring that their routine accounting, payroll and statutory obligations are attended to accurately and on time.

This is a hands-on client accounting role, rather than a purely administrative or internal bookkeeping position.

You will work across a range of businesses and industries, giving you exposure to different accounting environments, transactions and client requirements.

The role will suit someone who is organised, deadline-driven and comfortable working independently, while still being able to communicate professionally with clients and escalate matters when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting functions for a portfolio of clients.
  • Capture and process accounting transactions accurately and timeously.
  • Perform monthly bank, creditor, debtor and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Prepare management accounts and financial reports where required.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns and assist with SARS-related compliance.
  • Process payroll and manage PAYE, UIF and related statutory submissions.
  • Assist with annual financial statements and year-end accounting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate client accounting records and ensure all supporting documentation is properly filed.
  • Monitor statutory and accounting deadlines and ensure submissions are completed on time.
  • Liaise directly with clients regarding accounting records, outstanding information and financial queries.
  • Communicate with SARS, CIPC, banks and other relevant institutions on behalf of clients when required.
  • Identify accounting discrepancies and resolve or escalate issues appropriately.
  • Assist the director and accounting team with accounting, tax and client-related matters.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with sensitive client financial information.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, Bookkeeping or a related field.
  • At least 3 years' relevant accounting/bookkeeping experience.
  • Experience working in an accounting or public practice environment will be highly advantageous.
  • Practical experience with VAT, PAYE, payroll and SARS requirements.
  • Good working knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles.
  • Experience working on accounting/bookkeeping software.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

The Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who can take ownership of their work and manage client accounting requirements with limited supervision.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Accurate and highly detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable working with multiple clients and deadlines.
  • Organised and able to prioritise competing tasks.
  • Proactive rather than waiting to be instructed on every task.
  • Confident communicating with clients.
  • Able to identify problems and find practical solutions.
  • Reliable and accountable for the quality and completion of their work.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced professional practice.
  • Interested in developing a long-term career within the accounting profession.

What We Offer

  • Exposure to a diverse portfolio of clients and industries.
  • Practical experience across bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and statutory compliance.
  • The opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals and the director.
  • A professional and collaborative working environment.
  • The opportunity to take ownership of client portfolios and develop your accounting experience.
