The Role

We're looking for an experienced accounting professional to take ownership of the day-to-day books for a portfolio of clients across limited companies and sole traders. This is the engine room of the practice — accurate, well-maintained records are the foundation everything else is built on, and we need someone who genuinely takes pride in keeping things clean, reconciled, and up to date.

You'll work closely with — and report into — our Senior Accountant, who'll review your work and support your development. Your focus is owning the bookkeeping function: processing, reconciliations, VAT, and keeping clients' records in great shape so the wider team can deliver excellent compliance and advisory work on top.

This is a role for someone with real, hands-on bookkeeping experience who can work independently and be trusted to get it right. The single most important thing for us is depth of experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate, up-to-date books for a portfolio of clients across limited companies and sole traders.
• Process sales and purchase invoices, expenses, and bank transactions.
• Perform regular bank, credit card, and control account reconciliations.
• Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable for clients.
• Prepare and submit VAT return.
• Carry out month-end routines and ensure records are review-ready for the Senior Accountant.
• Liaise directly with clients to chase information, answer day-to-day queries, and keep their records current.
• Help clients get the most out of their accounting software and good record-keeping habits.
• Flag anomalies, missing information, or potential issues early.

Essential Experience & Skills

• Minimum 5 years' senior bookkeeping experience.
• Strong, hands-on bookkeeping skills across the full cycle — processing, reconciliations, VAT, and month-end.
• Xero experience is essential — you should be confident working in Xero day to day.
• Solid understanding of UK VAT and the basics of how bookkeeping feeds into accounts and tax.
• Highly accurate, organised, and able to manage multiple clients and deadlines independently.
• Confident in communicating directly with clients and chasing information when needed.
• Experience in a practice / multi-client environment (rather than a single in-house role).

Desirable (a bonus, not essential)

• A bookkeeping or accounting qualification.
• Experience with the wider Xero ecosystem / connected apps (e.g. Dext, Hubdoc, AutoEntry).
• Payroll experience.
