Job description

We are a growing retail business seeking a hands-on Accountant to join our finance team. You will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, month‑end close, and ensuring strong controls across retail operations including inventory, point-of-sale reconciliations, and store accounting. This role suits a detail-oriented, process-driven accountant who thrives in a fast-paced retail environment.

Key Duties

  • Month‑end and Year‑end Close — Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations to deliver timely, accurate month‑end financials.
  • Financial Reporting — Compile management accounts, variance analysis, and KPI reporting for senior management; assist with statutory financial statements.
  • Retail Accounting Operations — Reconcile POS takings, store deposits, cash floats, and daily sales reports; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Tax and Compliance — Prepare and support VAT, PAYE, UIF, SDL calculations and submissions; ensure compliance with SARS and relevant legislation.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting — Assist with annual budgets, monthly forecasts, and rolling cash‑flow projections; provide variance explanations.
  • Internal Controls and Process Improvement — Maintain and strengthen internal controls; document processes and implement efficiencies across retail finance workflows.
  • Audit and Stakeholder Liaison — Support internal and external audits; provide schedules, explanations, and remedial actions as required.
  • Systems and Data Management — Maintain accurate master data in ERP; work with IT/operations to resolve transactional or system issues.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: BCom in Accounting, BCompt, CTA, or equivalent tertiary qualification.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years accounting experience, with at least 2 years in retail or FMCG accounting preferred.
  • Professional Status: Part‑qualified or qualified accountant (e.g., SAICA articles in progress, CIMA, ACCA) is an advantage but not mandatory for strong candidates.

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced Excel (pivot tables, lookups, formulas).
  • Experience with retail ERP/POS systems and accounting software (examples: SAP, Pastel, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of IFRS, VAT rules, PAYE and SARS reporting requirements.

Core Competencies:

  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
  • Proven ability to meet tight month‑end deadlines.
  • Analytical mindset with clear commercial awareness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Other: South African ID or valid work permit; willingness to travel to stores when required.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience with multi‑store retail accounting and intercompany reconciliations.
  • Exposure to process automation, Excel macros, or basic scripting for reporting efficiencies.
  • Prior involvement in audit engagements and statutory filing processes.
