Accountant

The Accountant is responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organisation, through conducting accurate data analysis and offering advice to management on strategies to maximise profits, securing long term success for the company.

To succeed in this role, you will have a proactive attitude, strong work ethic, be well-organised, plan ahead and solve problems, along with a strong safety focus and clear communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

Financial Record Management

• Maintain accurate financial records
• Record transactions, journal entries and adjustments
• Maintain accounts receivable and supporting documentation
• Maintain accounts payable, ensure timely payment of invoices, confirming validity of the debt and gathering appropriate signatures
• Assist in preparing financial statements
• Analyse financial information, prepare and monitor balance sheets
• Ensure compliance with organisational guidelines and procedures, as well as South African regulation
• Reconcile accounts payable and receivable to ensure accuracy
• Resolve accounts payable and receivable issues and queries
• Follow up on outstanding payments and manage vendor accounts
• Update financial records via accounting software (Xero)
• Monthly financial & management reporting to trial balance

Bank Reconciliation & Cash Flow Management

• Reconcile bank statements and financial accounts
• Monitor cash flow and assist in forecasting financial needs
• Identify discrepancies and resolve financial inconsistencies

Tax & Compliance Support

• Assist in preparing tax returns and compliance filings
• Ensure adherence to financial regulations and accounting standards
• Maintain documentation for audits and regulatory reviews

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

• Support budgeting and forecasting activities
• Analyse financial trends and prepare variance reports
• Provide insights to improve cost efficiency and profitability

General Accounting & Administrative Support

• Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
• Assist in implementing accounting policies and internal controls
• Collaborate with auditors, vendors and internal teams for financial reporting
• Ad hoc finance duties as required by the Head of Finance

Minimum requirements

• Completed degree in Finance, or related
• 2-3 years of experience in an accountant (or similar) role, essential
• Sound understanding of accounting processes
• Experience with VAT processing, essential
• Working knowledge of Xero Accounting Software
• Efficiency on MS Office, including Excel Advanced
• Document management and retention
• Proven experience in statutory and management reporting skills
• Experience in the downstream fuel industry, advantageous
