All rounder Handyman/builder

About the position

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on handyman to take responsibility for maintenance and caretaking across a residential property portfolio.

You will be based at a 26-room commune near Jeppe High School for Boys, on the border of Jeppestown and Kensington. Your responsibilities will also cover seven apartments in Berea and Yeoville.

This position suits someone with a broad range of practical skills who can identify problems, organise their workload and complete tasks without constant supervision.

Living at the commune is a requirement of the job. Accommodation is provided for the successful applicant only. This is not a commuting position.

Your responsibilities

The work includes general repairs, preventative maintenance, cleaning, gardening and keeping the properties in good condition. You will also assist with renovation and construction projects.

You should be comfortable handling a variety of maintenance tasks involving plumbing, electrical work, tiling and painting. Experience in other building trades will be an advantage.

The role also involves communicating with tenants, attending to maintenance requests, showing available accommodation to prospective tenants and assisting with tenant placements.

Experience and requirements

Applicants must have at least three years of electrical experience, three years of plumbing experience, and at least one year of experience in both tiling and painting.

Relevant electrical or plumbing qualifications are preferred. Candidates who have developed their skills through substantial practical, on-the-job experience will also be considered.

A valid driver’s licence and contactable references are essential. You must be able to work independently and deal professionally with tenants.

Salary, accommodation and commission

The basic salary is R8000 per month, plus free accommodation at the commune, so you wont have any transport or accommodation costs

You can earn additional commission by marketing available units and successfully placing tenants. Commission earnings may reach R7,000 per month, depending on placements, and are separate from the basic salary.
