Artisan Assistant (Mining)

Our client, a well-established company in the mining industry, is seeking an Artisan Assistant (Mining) to join their operations in Mooinooi, North West, on a 12-month contract. The successful candidate will provide general assistance to qualified Artisans, including Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers and Fitters, by supporting maintenance activities, handling tools and equipment, maintaining housekeeping standards and ensuring work areas are safe and organised. This is a junior, hands-on role suited to candidates with previous mining experience who are eager to support maintenance teams in a mining environment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Minimum of 1–2 years' experience as an Artisan Assistant, General Assistant or in a similar support role within the mining industry.
  • Previous underground or surface mining experience.
  • Experience assisting qualified Artisans such as Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers or Fitters.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment.
  • Fluent in English with the ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Medically fit to work on a mine site.
  • Basic understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
  • Ability to work shifts, overtime and standby when required.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing manual labour in a mining environment.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist qualified Artisans, including Diesel Mechanics, Boilermakers, Riggers and Fitters, with daily maintenance, repair and installation activities.
  • Carry, transport and organise tools, equipment, materials and spare parts required for maintenance tasks.
  • Prepare tools, materials and work areas before maintenance activities commence.
  • Clean tools, machinery, workshop equipment and work areas after maintenance has been completed.
  • Assist with dismantling, cleaning and reassembling equipment and mechanical components under the supervision of a qualified Artisan.
  • Support planned preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs and shutdown maintenance activities.
  • Fetch tools, consumables and replacement parts as required.
  • Assist with lifting, moving and positioning equipment, materials and components using approved lifting methods and equipment.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are cleaned, inspected and stored correctly after use.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards in workshops and designated work areas.
  • Report damaged tools, equipment defects and unsafe conditions to the Artisan or Supervisor.
  • Assist with completing basic maintenance records, inspection checklists and job cards where required.
  • Comply with all Mine Health and Safety regulations, company policies and safe work procedures.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments and safety inspections.
  • Report hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties assigned by the qualified Artisan or Supervisor.
