Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Accountant to join our finance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the accounting function through accurate financial processing, reconciliations, reporting, and compliance activities. This role requires strong analytical skills, effective communication, and the ability to meet strict deadlines while maintaining high levels of accuracy and professionalism.

Key Duties

  • Liaise with Branch Managers, Branch Accountants, Operational Managers, colleagues, Department Managers, and Auditors.
  • Code financial information received from branches for processing.
  • Process journal entries.
  • Review and verify processing completed at branch level or at Tray.
  • Ensure all supporting documentation is received and appropriately filed.
  • Import and export CAB files.
  • Perform general ledger reviews and checks.
  • Ensure journals are accurately reconciled.
  • Ensure account matching is balanced and complete.
  • Prepare and produce management reports within required deadlines.
  • Complete chrono statement reconciliations for revenue and expenses and discuss any discrepancies with Branch and Operational Managers.
  • Perform turnover comparisons against CGOPC figures and investigate variances.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and ensure balances are adequately supported and justified.
  • Generate and maintain balance sheet reconciliation files.
  • Prepare VAT declaration forms, reconcile VAT accounts, and identify any corrections required for subsequent declarations.
  • Process Withholding Tax (WHT) certificates.
  • Control and reconcile WHT accounts.
  • Identify problem areas, escalate concerns to management, investigate issues, and implement resolutions.
  • Match and reconcile accounts.
  • Consistently meet departmental and group reporting deadlines.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties required by Tray or Management that align with the nature of the role.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member, ensuring proactive and effective communication.
  • Contribute to a high-performance team culture through consistent achievement of deadlines and objectives.

  • Keep management informed of work progress, challenges, and key developments.

  • Oversee and manage allocated branch portfolios responsibly and efficiently.

Role Summary

As an Assistant Accountant, you will be expected to consistently deliver accurate, reliable, and high-quality financial information. All financial data and reports must be thoroughly reviewed to ensure correctness and compliance with group policies and procedures. This includes analysing reports, reviewing general ledger transactions, identifying unusual items, and investigating discrepancies promptly. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, a commitment to maintaining accounting standards, and the ability to present reports in accordance with group specifications.
