Assistant Retail and Bakery Store Manager

We are looking for a Assistant Retail & Bakery Store Manager to oversee the day-to-day operation of our retail and bakery environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating staff, maintaining high customer service standards, ensuring product availability and presentation, and making sure that retail and bakery operations run efficiently and according to company standards.

This is a hands-on operational role suited to someone who enjoys working with people, takes ownership and can work effectively in a fast-paced bakery and retail environment.

Key Responsibilities

Retail & Front-End Operations

• Coordinate the daily activities of the retail floor and front-end/counter.
• Ensure customers receive friendly, efficient and professional service.
• Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, appearance and performance.
• Allocate daily duties and ensure staff are adequately deployed.
• Monitor queues, customer flow and service levels.
• Ensure tills, counters and retail areas are kept clean, organised and ready for trade.
• Handle customer queries and resolve operational issues promptly.
• Support sales and customer service targets.

Bakery Operations

• Coordinate the daily retail bakery operation and ensure products are available when required.
• Monitor product quality, freshness, presentation, labelling and merchandising.
• Ensure bakery products are handled, packed and displayed according to company standards.
• Monitor stock levels, product rotation, wastage and shortages.
• Liaise with production to ensure the correct products and quantities are available.
• Ensure bakery and retail areas comply with food safety, hygiene and housekeeping requirements.

People & Team Coordination

• Lead and motivate the retail and bakery team.
• Provide guidance and support to employees.
• Monitor performance and address issues promptly.
• Assist with training and onboarding of new employees.
• Promote teamwork, accountability and professional conduct.
• Ensure employees understand and follow company procedures and standards.

Administration & Controls

• Assist with daily stock counts and stock control.
• Monitor wastage, shortages, returns and damaged products.
• Ensure pricing, promotions and product information are accurate.
• Complete required daily operational checks and reports.
• Escalate operational, staffing, customer or quality issues to management.

Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Minimum 2–3 years' experience in retail, bakery, FMCG, food service or a similar environment.
• Previous experience in a supervisory, team leader or controller position will be advantageous.
• Experience working with staff and coordinating daily operations.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good organisational and administrative ability.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong attention to detail and sense of urgency.
• Knowledge of food safety and hygiene requirements will be advantageous.
