Job purpose:

To teach, conduct research, produce accredited research, and supervise postgraduate students.

Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning:

  • Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the various sub-disciplines that constitute Social and Cultural Anthropology.

Research:

  • Supervise postgraduates and publish research in accredited journals.

Administration:

  • Administrative roles within the department and faculty.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (NQF 10) in Anthropology (and cognate disciplines).
  • Ten (10) years’ lecturing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in postgraduate supervision, including Honours, Master’s and PhD students.
  • Discipline based knowledge.
  • Experience lecturing undergraduates.
  • Experience in curriculum development.
  • Experience in compiling study guides.
  • Publications in peer reviewed, accredited journals, and a monograph.
  • Previous administrative and leadership experience is required.

Recommendations:

  • Demonstrated expertise in Anthropology, with a strong and coherent research profile in one or more relevant areas of the discipline – a focus on the environment would be a preference.
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed research publications in accredited national and international journals and/or scholarly books, monograph(s) and book chapters.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and/or manage research funding, grants or externally funded research projects.
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic development and visibility of Anthropology within the department, faculty and broader university.
  • Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
  • Evidence of an active and developing research programme, with potential for national and international research recognition.
  • Experience in media engagement and writing of opinion articles on matters relevant to your discipline.
  • Evidence of community engagement, public scholarship, policy engagement or knowledge exchange would be an advantage.
  • Previous experience, an NRF rating, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), the 4IR, and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) through a political lens are added advantages.

  • MS Office skills.
  • LLMS such as Moodle and other academic related systems.
  • Ability to lecture and assess.
