Job description

OUR WORLD

We are a busy Mom and Dad who run our own business while raising three incredible neurodivergent children—a 14-year-old son and 12-year-old twin daughters.

We are looking for a caring, organised, energetic and proactive person to become an important part of our family.

Our children are bright, funny and full of personality once they get to know you. They simply need someone who understands that every child learns differently and can provide structure, encouragement and consistency.

We are looking for someone who can creatively engage the children, support their education, encourage independence and help us create a calm, consistent home environment. If you enjoy mentoring children while helping a busy family stay organised, we'd love to hear from you.

WHAT WE NEED MORE OF

Education & Homework

  • Supervise daily homework.
  • Help the children log into Google Classroom and online tutoring sessions.
  • Encourage good study habits, organisation and independence every single day.
  • Ensure school bags are packed, uniforms are ready and school supplies are topped up.
  • Keep parents informed of important school notices, deadlines and upcoming events.

Childcare

  • School collections and transport to extracurricular activities.
  • Prepare healthy afternoon snacks.
  • Support the children while they prepare simple dinners on their allocated cooking nights.
  • Maintain routines while encouraging independence.
  • Organise fun, engaging and educational activities.
  • Support emotional regulation and problem-solving when needed.

Family Assistance

  • Grocery shopping when required.
  • Help organise bedrooms and study areas.
  • Assist with sorting, storing, selling or donating household items.
  • Encourage the children to take pride in keeping their own spaces clean and organised.
  • Promote healthy routines, personal hygiene and positive self-esteem.
  • Ensure kids attend to their pets every day.
  • Occasionally assist with feeding the family pets.
  • Ensure children's daily chores are completed.
  • Run occasional errands.
  • Manage the children's schedules and assist with maintaining the family diary.

SOME BACKGROUND THAT AFFECTS THE FOREGROUND

Our family has recently opened a new business branch in Johannesburg, which has required both parents to travel more frequently over the past few months.

Our current au pair, who has become part of our family, is relocating to the Netherlands on 1 August 2026, so we are hoping to find the right person to join us as soon as possible.

OVERTIME

There will occasionally be weeks where both parents need to travel to Johannesburg.

During these weeks you may be asked to stay overnight in our home. This would never exceed three nights in a single week and would only ever be Monday to Thursday—never weekends.

You would assist with the morning routine, school preparation and school run before returning in the afternoon as normal.

All overnight stays are paid as overtime together with an overnight sleep-in allowance.

If overnight work is something you are unable to commit to, this role unfortunately won't be the right fit.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

During school holidays, the hours generally remain the same but are shifted earlier to approximately 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.

The children may occasionally attend holiday programmes or spend time with family and friends. On those days, you'll focus on planning activities, organising the children's spaces, meal planning, administration, running errands and helping us keep family life organised behind the scenes.

HOURS

Monday to Friday (1:00 pm – 6:00 pm) Term Time

Monday to Friday (10:00am - 3:00pm Holidays

ADDITIONAL HOURS (If ever needed)

Monday to Thursday (Monday 6:00pm - 9:00pm - Wednesday)

Tuesday - Thursday 6:00am - 7:30am)

Overnight Stipend R300 per night (21:00 - 06:00)

The children generally finish school at around 2:00 pm and we are often home by approximately 5:00 pm.

The additional paid time allows for planning, organisation, administration and preparing for the following day.

We believe this role works best with flexibility from both sides.

Some days the children may be with family, attending activities or holiday programmes, giving you lighter days. Other days we may be delayed at work, a child may be ill or unexpected situations arise.

If you prefer, you are welcome to keep a detailed record of your hours and claim overtime where applicable. We value honesty, fairness and open communication, and if either party ever feels the balance has shifted, we'll simply sit down and discuss it together.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO

✔ Has previous childcare or au pair experience (experience with neurodivergent children is highly advantageous).

✔ Has a valid driver's licence and preferably their own vehicle. Business travel is reimbursed according to current SARS mileage rates.

✔ Is confident transporting children safely.

✔ Is organised, dependable and proactive.

✔ Loves working with children.

✔ Is patient, calm and nurturing while also being confident enough to establish healthy boundaries.

✔ Has excellent communication skills and understands that neurodivergent children often need information explained in many different ways before it truly makes sense. Patience, consistency and empathy are essential.

✔ Has experience supporting Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia or other learning differences (preferred).

✔ Thinks independently, shows initiative and enjoys solving problems.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds. Male or female, LGBTQ+, Christian, Pagan or any other faith or belief—we genuinely value authenticity, kindness and respect above all else.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • R9,000 per month
  • Private self-contained flatlet available (live-in optional) Values at R4500
  • Fuel reimbursement for work-related travel
  • Supportive and respectful family environment
  • Long-term opportunity
  • The chance to genuinely change children's lives
  • Medical Aid R1826

Autistic hearts can be incredibly fragile, but when they trust you and let you in, they love deeply and fiercely. We are looking for someone who sees that as a privilege.

TO APPLY

Please send us:

  • Your CV
  • Contactable references
  • A short introduction addressed to Jaime, Ava and Lilly.

Rather than writing a traditional cover letter to us, we'd love you to introduce yourself to our children.

Tell them a little about who you are, what you enjoy, why you'd like to become part of our family and what you think you'd bring to our team.

Because our children are autistic, they feel safest when they are included in important decisions that affect their lives. Your introduction will help them begin getting to know the people who may become an important part of their world.

Don't worry about making it perfect—we're simply looking for kindness, authenticity and someone our children can connect with.

Applications without this addition will not be accepted.
