Job description

Location: Durban North
Working Hours:
Monday – Friday: 07:00 – 16:45
Saturday: 08:00 – 14:00

We are looking for a warm, caring, energetic and responsible Nanny / Au Pair to become part of a family and provide attentive care and positive engagement for two young children.

This is more than simply supervising the children. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and who will actively contribute to their development, learning, confidence, behaviour and overall wellbeing.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Naturally warm, patient and nurturing.
  • Happy, positive and able to bring a smile and positive energy into the home.
  • Passionate about working with children.
  • Creative and able to keep children meaningfully engaged.
  • Patient and calm when dealing with challenging behaviour or difficult moments.
  • Organised, responsible and reliable.
  • Able to establish appropriate boundaries while still creating a loving and supportive environment.
  • A good role model who can teach and reinforce good manners, respect, kindness, responsibility and positive values.
  • Able to encourage children's independence and confidence.
  • Someone who understands that children need active engagement and stimulation, rather than simply being supervised.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily care and development of the children, including:

  • Providing attentive and responsible supervision.
  • Engaging the children in age-appropriate educational and stimulating activities.
  • Encouraging learning through play, reading, creative activities, puzzles, games and other brain-stimulating activities.
  • Assisting with homework and school-related activities.
  • Encouraging good behaviour, manners, respect and positive social interaction.
  • Reinforcing good values and helping the children develop confidence and independence.
  • Encouraging communication, creativity and problem-solving.
  • Planning activities that keep the children mentally and physically engaged.
  • Assisting with school routines and after-school activities.
  • Preparing or assisting with simple meals/snacks for the children where required.
  • Assisting the children with keeping their rooms, toys and play areas tidy.
  • Helping to tidy up after the children and keeping children's areas organised.
  • A housekeeper is employed in the home, so this is not a general housekeeping position.
  • Ensuring the children's belongings, school items and activity bags are organised.
  • Taking the children to activities, appointments or other outings when required.
  • Providing a safe, caring and positive environment at all times.

Driving Requirements - will be advantageous.

A valid driver's licence and confident driving ability will be advantageous, as the successful candidate may occasionally need to transport the children to school-related activities, extracurricular activities or other outings.

Where the candidate uses their own vehicle for authorised activities relating to the children, petrol/travel expenses will be reimbursed separately in accordance with the family's arrangements.

Experience & Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Nanny, Au Pair, Childminder, Teacher's Assistant or in a similar childcare role.
  • Experience caring for young children is essential.
  • A genuine interest in children's development and wellbeing.
  • Ability to assist with homework and learning activities.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Contactable references are essential.
  • A valid driver's licence is advantageous/required depending on the transport arrangements.
  • Must be reliable, punctual and trustworthy.
  • Must be comfortable working Monday to Friday as well as Saturdays.

What We Are Looking For

Most importantly, we are looking for the right personality.

The successful candidate should be someone who naturally connects with children — someone who is patient, affectionate, encouraging, energetic and genuinely happy to spend time with them.

We want someone who will read with them, talk to them, play with them, encourage them, teach them, listen to them and help them grow.

If you believe that caring for children is about more than simply keeping them occupied, and you would love the opportunity to become a positive influence in the lives of two young children, we would love to hear from you.

Pay: R7 000,00 - R12 000,00 per month
