Job Purpose:

The Boiler maker, Welder is responsible for providing technical support to the maintenance team by assisting with the upkeep, repair, and installation of mechanical systems, equipment, and machinery used in the pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The role ensures that equipment runs efficiently, minimizing downtime and maintaining the high standards of product quality and safety.

MAIN TASKS / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance Support

• Assist in the routine and preventative maintenance of all mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment within the facility.
• Conduct regular inspections to identify potential mechanical failures or areas for improvement.
• Perform minor repairs and assist in more complex repairs under the supervision of the maintenance team.
• Ensure machine calibrations and safety systems are functioning properly.

Equipment Installation and Setup

• Assist in the installation and commissioning of new machinery, ensuring they meet operational and safety standards.
• Ensure equipment is correctly set up before use in production processes.
• Provide support in the decommissioning of old equipment and installation of replacements.

Technical Support and Troubleshooting

• Identify, report, and help resolve mechanical issues with equipment that could impact production.
• Provide technical support for breakdowns, working in collaboration with senior mechanical technicians.
• Assist in root cause analysis of mechanical failures and suggest improvements or solutions.

Safety and Compliance

• Ensure all maintenance work complies with safety standards and relevant regulatory requirements.
• Maintain work areas and tools to meet cleanliness and safety standards.
• Assist in conducting safety checks for equipment and machines, ensuring compliance with health and safety protocols.

Documentation and Reporting

• Accurately record maintenance activities and keep logs of repairs, inspections, and services.
• Provide timely updates to the maintenance supervisor regarding equipment status, breakdowns, and maintenance schedules.
• Assist in preparing and submitting reports for internal audits and inspections.

Collaboration and Teamwork

• Work closely with the maintenance team and other departments to resolve mechanical issues swiftly.
• Attend and participate in team meetings to discuss maintenance schedules, challenges, and improvements.

Qualifications

• Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Science
• National Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (NQF Level 5 or higher) Advantageous
• Red Seal Boiler Maker Trade Certificate (essential)
• Coded Welding Certification ( Advantageous)
• Basic Health and Safety Certifications (e.g., first aid, safety regulations)
• Valid Driver's License (advantageous)

Experience

• Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex technical drawings, schematics, and welding symbols to plan layouts.
• Material Preparation & Fitting: Measure, cut, and shape metals, and clamp components into place for fit-up and assembly.
• Welding Execution: Perform structural and custom welding using techniques such as MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Stick (SMAW) on various materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum).
• Quality Assurance:Inspect and test completed welds for structural integrity, dimensions, and tolerances using precision measuring instruments.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery (saws, press brakes, ironworkers) while keeping the work area and tools clean and maintained.
• Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including wearing protective gear, operating overhead cranes, and following OSHA (or local equivalent) guidelines.
• Exposure to working in cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) environment (advantageous).

Other

• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, machines, and tools.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
• Plumbing, and hydraulic system knowledge would be advantageous.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Comfortable with manual labor and working in confined spaces.
• Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office, maintenance management software).
• Ability to work on-call or overtime when required.
