We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeper / Accountant to join our team and manage a portfolio of clients. This position is suited to someone who has worked in a South African accounting or bookkeeping practice, enjoys client interaction and takes ownership of producing accurate, deadline-driven work.

Key responsibilities

• Manage monthly bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients using Xero
• Perform bank reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records
• Process payroll using SimplePay and prepare employee payslips
• Prepare VAT201 and EMP201 returns within statutory deadlines
• Prepare supporting documentation for CIPC annual returns
• Prepare draft annual financial statements and tax returns for review and sign-off
• Follow up with clients for outstanding records and supporting documentation
• Respond to routine client enquiries professionally and in plain language
• Maintain accurate client records and handle confidential information responsibly
• Assist with general accounting, compliance and practice-related work as required

Minimum requirements

• Previous experience in a South African accounting or bookkeeping practice
• Practical experience managing bookkeeping for multiple clients
• Sound understanding of bookkeeping principles and South African statutory compliance
• Experience preparing VAT201 and EMP201 returns
• Strong Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills
• Professional communication and client-service skills
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines

Experience with Xero is highly advantageous. Experience with SimplePay, payroll processing, CIPC annual returns, annual financial statements and tax returns will also be beneficial.

A bookkeeping or accounting qualification is advantageous, but relevant practical experience will be valued more highly.

Employment details

• Permanent, full-time position
• Cape Town-based hybrid working arrangement
• Salary of R15,000 to R22,000 gross per month, depending on experience
• Reports directly to the Practice Owner
