Job description
Access World is a global commodity warehousing and logistics business. We specialize in the handling, storage, and processing of commodities including non-ferrous and ferrous metals, ferroalloys, project cargo, oil & gas, and various agricultural products. We are an approved warehouse keeper of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and provide LME warehousing and associated services to traders, producers, financiers, and consumers of base metals. In addition, we provide physical warehousing and related logistics services for commodities such as cocoa beans, rubber, cotton, and other agricultural products. Access World also acts as collateral manager of ferroalloys, minor metals, as well as oil and gas. Our regions operate through semi-autonomous offices supported by corporate functions including Commercial, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, and Operations. Department: Commercial – Clearing & Forwarding Reports to: Commercial Head – Clearing & Forwarding Location: Gosforth/Durban Purposes of the position: To drive sustainable business growth by identifying, securing, and onboarding profitable new business opportunities within the Clearing & Forwarding and Warehousing divisions. The Business Development Manager is responsible for developing a strong pipeline of new and reactivated clients, managing the sales cycle from prospecting through to successful onboarding, and ensuring new accounts achieve targeted gross profit before transitioning them into Key Account Management. Key Responsibilities Business Development Generate new business opportunities through prospecting, networking, and market engagement. Identify and target profitable import, export, warehousing, and transport opportunities aligned to Access World’s commercial strategy. Develop and maintain a pipeline of qualified prospects to achieve business growth objectives. Sales and Client Acquisition Manage the full sales cycle from lead generation through qualification, proposal development, negotiation, and contract conclusion. Prepare accurate commercial proposals, RFQs, and tender submissions in collaboration with the Estimating and Pricing teams. Successfully onboard new clients and support account growth before handover to Key Account Management. Commercial Performance Achieve and exceed individual Gross Profit (GP) and warehousing revenue targets. Monitor sales performance, conversion rates, and pipeline activity against agreed objectives. Apply sound commercial judgement to maximise profitability and sustainable growth. Stakeholder Collaboration Build effective working relationships with Operations, Finance, Warehousing, and Commercial teams to ensure seamless service delivery. Ensure accurate client onboarding and first-time invoicing processes. Maintain regular communication with internal stakeholders throughout the sales process. Reporting and Pipeline Management Maintain accurate CRM records, sales forecasts, and pipeline reports. Track business development activities, conversion rates, and sales performance. Provide regular reporting and market feedback to support commercial decision-making. Minimum Requirements: Grade 12 (Matric). Minimum 15 years’ experience in Business Development or Sales within a Clearing & Forwarding or Freight Forwarding environment. Proven and verifiable track record of self-generated new business development. Demonstrated achievement of individual Gross Profit targets over the past three consecutive years. Preferred Qualification: Relevant tertiary qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Management, Freight Forwarding, or a related field. Professional Selling Skills (PSS) certification will be advantageous. Experience Required: Strong understanding of Incoterms, customs clearing, freight forwarding (air and ocean), transport, and warehousing. Proven experience managing the complete sales lifecycle from prospecting through account handover. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, CRM systems, pipeline management, and sales reporting. Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport, with willingness to travel extensively to clients. Advantageous Experience: Existing pipeline of qualified business opportunities within the logistics and freight forwarding industry. Established network of clients and industry contacts across import, export, and warehousing sectors. Experience preparing commercial proposals, RFQs, and tender submissions.
