Job Overview

Express Construction is seeking a motivated, experienced and detail-oriented Buyer to join our team in Durban.

The successful candidate will be responsible for sourcing and procuring construction materials, plant, equipment and services across various construction disciplines, ensuring competitive pricing, quality, timely delivery and compliance with project budgets and requirements.

The ideal candidate must have a minimum of five years’ experience in the construction industry, with proven experience in procurement and purchasing.

Key Responsibilities

• Source, evaluate and procure construction materials, plant, equipment and services in line with project specifications, requirements and budgets.
• Obtain competitive quotations and establish and maintain strong supplier relationships.
• Negotiate pricing, payment terms and delivery schedules to secure the best value for the company.
• Place purchase orders and monitor deliveries to ensure materials and equipment arrive on time.
• Manage stock levels and monitor inventory where applicable.
• Maintain accurate procurement records and documentation, including purchase orders, invoices and delivery notes.
• Work closely with site teams, project managers and the finance department to meet project requirements.
• Ensure compliance with company procurement policies, procedures and applicable safety requirements.
• Assist with sourcing suitable suppliers and managing procurement costs across projects.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years’ construction industry experience across various disciplines, including civil, building, roads and infrastructure.
• Proven experience in procurement and purchasing within the construction industry.
• Strong negotiation and supplier relationship management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• A valid driver’s licence will be advantageous.

Advantageous Experience

• Established relationships with construction industry suppliers.
• Experience with tender procurement and contract management.
• Knowledge of construction materials, plant, equipment and associated costs.
