Carpenter – Exhibition & Events

Positions Available: 3

Location: Beaconvale, Parow, Cape Town

Employment Type: Fixed-Term Contract (3 Months), with possibility of permanent placement based on performance and operational requirements

Salary: R80–R120 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

Standard Working Hours: 8 hours per day

Travel: Local and out-of-province travel required when operationally necessary

Work Location: In person

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled and experienced Carpenter to join our team specialising in exhibition stand construction and events.

The successful candidate will be responsible for constructing, installing, modifying and dismantling exhibition stands, displays and related structures.

The role is based at our workshop in Beaconvale, with regular travel to exhibition venues and client sites. Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, meeting strict deadlines and working according to exhibition and venue schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Construct and assemble exhibition stands, counters, displays and related structures.
  • Manufacture and prepare exhibition components in the workshop.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, measurements and construction plans.
  • Accurately measure, cut, shape and join timber, MDF, plywood and other materials.
  • Use hand tools, power tools and carpentry equipment safely and correctly.
  • Install exhibition stands and structures at various venues and client sites.
  • Make on-site adjustments, modifications and repairs where required.
  • Dismantle exhibition stands after events.
  • Assist with packing, loading and unloading materials and equipment.
  • Ensure all work is completed accurately and to the required quality standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop and worksite.
  • Work closely with supervisors, project teams and other trades.
  • Follow company, client, venue and health and safety requirements.
  • Meet strict installation, event and breakdown deadlines.
  • Travel to exhibition venues within Cape Town and out of province when required.
  • Perform other reasonable carpentry and exhibition-related duties as required.

Working Hours & Operational Requirements:

The standard working schedule is 8 hours per day, however, exhibition work is dependent on project, client and venue schedules.

Candidates must therefore be willing and available to work:

  • Monday to Friday as required.
  • Weekends when required by operational and exhibition schedules.
  • Night shifts when required for exhibition installations, builds or breakdowns.
  • Early mornings or late finishes depending on venue access times.
  • Additional hours when required by operational demands.
  • At different exhibition venues and client sites.
  • Out-of-province projects when required.

Flexibility is essential, as exhibition installation and breakdown times are often determined by venue access times and event deadlines.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years' carpentry experience with a recognised Trade Test Certification, OR
  • Minimum of 15 years' relevant carpentry experience without formal qualification
  • Previous exhibition stand, events, shopfitting, set-building or similar construction experience is essential.
  • Practical experience constructing and assembling structures.
  • Experience working with timber, MDF, plywood and other board materials.
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to read and work from drawings, measurements and specifications.
  • Ability to complete work accurately under tight deadlines.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong practical carpentry and construction skills.
  • Good attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual work, including lifting and moving materials.
  • Reliable, punctual and responsible.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel locally and out of province when required.
  • Willingness to work weekends and night shifts according to operational requirements.
  • Must have own safety boots suitable for workshop, construction and exhibition-site environments.
  • Willingness to undergo a pre-employment medical examination, at the company's cost.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens or hold a valid South African work permit that authorises them to work in this role.

  • Extensive exhibition stand construction experience.
  • Experience working at exhibition centres and event venues.
  • Shopfitting experience.
  • Set-building or event construction experience.
  • Experience working on large-scale exhibition projects.
  • Experience with exhibition-specific finishes and installations.
  • Basic finishing and installation skills.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • Experience working with a range of construction and finishing materials.

Safety & PPE:

Candidates are required to have their own safety boots suitable for construction, workshop and exhibition-site environments.

Additional PPE will be provided where required by the company, client or venue and in accordance with applicable health and safety requirements.

All employees are expected to comply with company, client and venue health and safety procedures.

Important Information for Applicants:

This is an exhibition-focused carpentry position and is not exclusively workshop-based.

Successful candidates will be required to travel to exhibition venues and client sites to complete construction, installation, modifications and breakdowns.

Due to the nature of the exhibition industry, weekend work, night shifts, extended hours and out-of-province travel may be required depending on operational and project requirements.

Applicants must have:

  • Minimum of 10 years' carpentry experience with a Trade Test Certification, OR minimum of 15 years' relevant carpentry experience without formal qualification.
  • Relevant exhibition/build experience.
  • Their own safety boots.
  • The flexibility to work according to exhibition and operational schedules.
  • South African citizenship or a valid South African work permit.
