takealot.com, a leading South African online retailer, is looking for a highly talented Catalogue Data Assistant [Fixed Term Contract] to join our team in Durban.

The position of Catalogue Data Assistant reports to the Catalogue Data Automation, Optimization &Team Lead:

Catalogue Data Operations.

Purpose of the role: Execution-focused role responsible for processing the daily volume of catalog tickets, data entries, and system corrections. Working across both standard queues and AI-testing pipelines, this role ensures individual product listings are accurate, active, and compliant while providing the raw operational data needed to train automation models.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Enrich new product listings within CatAdmin, ensuring all structural fields, variations, and image standards are correctly loaded and enhanced for customer visibility.
  • Review, clean up, and resolve simple listing inconsistencies, duplicate product pages, or missing attributes to maintain high Catalog Quality Scores.
  • Use internal AI co-pilot systems and pre-designed prompt templates to generate high-quality product descriptions and bullet points at scale, further enriching existing catalog data.
  • Act as a human validator—reviewing, editing, and approving AI-generated content to catch and correct formatting errors or inaccurate descriptions before they go live.
  • Physically audit and update accurate weight metrics, carton dimensions, and EAN/UPC barcode numbers directly from the warehouse floor.
  • Execute variant linking/delinking, clean up identified duplicate listings, and resolve SKU exceptions on PIDs.
  • Apply standard backend flags, disclaimers, cart limits, and specialty attributes as directed
  • Perform customer review moderation via Cat Admin against established guidelines, and initiate Stock Confirmation requests with the DC.
  • Monitor, action, and close day-to-day catalogue data tickets routed through Zendesk and Jira within agreed SLA timeframes.
  • Investigate merchant listing disputes and customer data complaints, resolving straightforward errors and escalating complex data anomalies to Senior Specialists.
  • Work closely with the Catalog Operations Lead to meet daily productivity and data volume targets.

Attributes required:

  • Hands-on CatAdmin Usage: Practical knowledge of navigating CatAdmin to locate specific SKUs, check approval statuses, modify basic product traits, and link product variants.
  • Catalog Rules Comprehension: Basic understanding of online product display behavior, attribute sorting filters, and online storefront categorization.
  • Basic Microsoft Excel Capability: Practical experience with Excel and Google Sheets, including sorting, filtering data, basic formulas, and navigating load sheets.
  • Advanced Web Research: Ability to rapidly search the internet to verify manufacturing specifications, brand names, and authentic product images to enrich product profile.
  • Guided AI Co-Pilots: Comfortable using prompt interfaces (e.g.,ChatGPT, internal text generation tools) to generate and enrich product copy based on strict instructions.
  • Jira & Zendesk Familiarity: Ability to update, add notes to, and transition task statuses inside Jira and Zendesk workflow environments.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Matric, Relevant Diploma OR 3+ years of administrative / data entry experience.
  • 1–2 years of experience within an E-commerce, Digital Merchandising, Retail Data, or Logistics environment.
  • Strong, practical experience in data capturing, bulk file processing, and conducting accurate online web research.
