Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Accounting, Advisory & Financial Services Firm Position: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Department: Executive Management Reports to: CEO / Managing Director Purpose: Financial Leadership, Sustainable Growth, Governance & Strategic Impact Role Purpose The CFO is responsible for leading the financial strategy, performance, controls and sustainability of the accounting firm. The CFO does more than prepare financial information. The role connects financial data, people, technology, clients and business strategy to ensure that the firm remains financially strong while creating measurable value for its clients, employees and wider business environment. The CFO must build a culture where financial information is accurate, transparent, timely and useful for decision-making. Key Responsibilities 1. Financial Strategy - Develop and implement the firm's financial strategy. - Prepare budgets, forecasts and long-term financial plans. - Monitor profitability, cash flow, revenue and operating costs. - Establish financial targets and performance measures. - Identify opportunities for sustainable revenue growth. - Evaluate major investments, projects and expansion opportunities. 2. Financial Control & Accounting - Oversee the firm's accounting operations. - Ensure accurate financial records and reporting. - Review income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements and management accounts. - Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, taxation and bank reconciliations. - Establish strong internal financial controls. - Reduce financial errors, duplication, waste and unnecessary expenditure. 3. Client Value & Service Quality - Ensure financial decisions support high-quality client service. - Monitor the profitability and sustainability of client engagements. - Develop financial reporting that helps clients understand their businesses. - Work with partners and managers to identify client financial needs. - Ensure the firm's services produce measurable business value rather than simply completing accounting tasks. 4. Technology & Innovation - Lead the financial aspects of accounting technology and automation. - Identify repetitive processes that can be automated. - Encourage the responsible use of AI, cloud accounting and data analytics. - Improve the firm's financial systems so information can move efficiently from transactions → records → reports → insights → decisions. - Use technology to make accounting services more accessible and efficient. 5. People & Culture - Develop financially capable teams. - Support training and professional development. - Establish clear performance expectations. - Encourage accountability, integrity, collaboration and continuous improvement. - Help create an environment where employees can develop their careers and contribute ideas. 6. Risk, Governance & Compliance - Maintain appropriate financial policies and procedures. - Monitor financial, operational and compliance risks. - Ensure the firm meets applicable accounting, taxation and regulatory requirements. - Maintain strong ethical standards. - Protect confidential client and company information. - Provide management with early warnings about financial risks. 7. Business Intelligence The CFO should turn financial information into business intelligence by answering questions such as: - Where is the firm's revenue coming from? - Which services create sustainable value? - Which costs are increasing? - Which clients and engagements require attention? - How much cash is available? - What is expected to happen over the next 3, 6 and 12 months? - Are financial targets being achieved? - Where can the firm improve efficiency? - What financial risks could affect the firm's future? 8. Social & Economic Impact The CFO should recognise that an accounting firm operates within a wider business environment. The role should therefore consider how the firm can: - Help businesses become financially sustainable. - Improve financial literacy among clients. - Support entrepreneurs and growing businesses. - Create meaningful employment opportunities. - Develop young accounting professionals. - Encourage ethical financial management. - Use technology to make professional financial services more accessible. - Build long-term relationships with clients and communities. Core Performance Measures The CFO should monitor a balanced set of measures, including: Financial - Revenue growth - Gross and operating margins - Cash-flow position - Debtor collection period - Operating costs - Profitability - Budget variance Client - Client retention - Client satisfaction - Service delivery time - Quality of financial reporting - Client profitability People - Employee retention - Professional development - Training hours - Productivity - Employee engagement Innovation - Processes automated - Technology adoption - Reporting efficiency - Reduction in manual errors Governance - Compliance performance - Internal-control effectiveness - Financial reporting accuracy - Risk management Leadership Principles The CFO is expected to operate according to five principles: Integrity — Financial information must be truthful, accurate and transparent. Accountability — Decisions must have clear ownership and measurable outcomes. Innovation — Accounting should continuously improve through technology, data and better processes. Value Creation — The objective is not simply to record what happened, but to help the business understand what it should consider next. Long-Term Thinking — Financial decisions should strengthen the firm's future rather than focus only on short-term results. Pay: R587 752,19 - R1 768 756,14 per year
