Role Overview
We are seeking a technically competent Civil Engineer to support the planning, design, procurement, implementation and close-out of civil and municipal infrastructure projects. The successful candidate should be comfortable moving between office-based design work, technical report writing, client and stakeholder meetings, statutory approval processes and construction-stage support. Exposure to roads, stormwater, water, sewer, earthworks and associated municipal services will be highly advantageous.
Project Lifecycle / Stage Exposure
The successful candidate should understand how their role contributes to the broader project lifecycle. Depending on seniority and professional responsibility, this will include the following:
· Stage 1 – Inception: assist with client briefing, site inspections, review of available drawings and records, scope definition, identification of surveys and specialist investigations, and preparation of inception inputs.
· Stage 2 – Concept and Viability: develop and compare engineering options, prepare preliminary layouts and calculations, identify constraints and risks, contribute to preliminary cost estimates and compile feasibility or concept reports.
· Stage 3 – Design Development: undertake detailed civil design, prepare calculations and drawings, coordinate with other disciplines, incorporate survey and geotechnical information, and participate in internal design reviews.
· Stage 4 – Documentation and Procurement: prepare construction drawings, technical specifications, schedules and tender documentation; respond to technical queries and support tender evaluation.
· Stage 5 – Contract Administration and Inspection: attend site and progress meetings, review contractor submissions, respond to RFIs, monitor quality and compliance, assist with measurements and variation assessments, and prepare site/progress reports.
· Stage 6 – Close-Out: assist with completion inspections, snag lists, as-built records, close-out documentation and final engineering reports.
Key Responsibilities
· Design roads, stormwater drainage, water reticulation, sewer networks, platforms and earthworks where applicable.
· Prepare engineering calculations, design notes, technical specifications, bills/schedules of quantities and construction drawings.
· Compile professional technical reports including inception, feasibility, design, condition assessment, tender evaluation, progress and close-out reports.
· Attend client meetings, design reviews, municipal meetings and site meetings; present technical recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
· Coordinate with surveyors, geotechnical engineers, environmental specialists, architects, contractors and other engineering disciplines.
· Review contractor proposals, shop drawings, material submissions and method statements within the engineer's delegated authority.
· Assist with project cost estimates, programmes, risk registers and tracking of engineering deliverables.
· Ensure design outputs are checked, traceable and issued in accordance with company QA/QC procedures.
Technical Reporting & Communication
· Prepare, review or contribute to clear and professionally structured technical reports appropriate to the role and project stage.
· Maintain accurate written records of assumptions, decisions, design changes, instructions, inspections and outstanding actions.
· Attend client, consultant, contractor, authority and internal project meetings as required and communicate technical matters in plain, professional language.
· Escalate technical, commercial, programme or compliance risks promptly and support decisions with drawings, calculations, records or other evidence.
· Prepare concise progress updates and ensure agreed actions are tracked to closure.
Regulatory, Contractual & Standards Knowledge
· ECSA professional requirements and ethical obligations.
· Relevant SANS standards, municipal engineering standards and client specifications.
· COTO/COLTO, TMH/TRH and related road standards where roads form part of the project.
· Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations as relevant to design and construction activities.
· Environmental, water-use, wayleave, servitude and municipal approval processes applicable to the project.
· Basic working knowledge of GCC, NEC and/or FIDIC contract administration will be advantageous.
Software / Technical Tools
· AutoCAD
· Autodesk Civil 3D
· Microsoft Excel
· Microsoft Project
· WaterGEMS / SewerGEMS / EPANET or similar hydraulic tools
Minimum Requirements
· BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering or equivalent recognised qualification.
· 3–8 years of relevant civil engineering experience.
· Demonstrable civil infrastructure design and technical report-writing experience.
· Ability to read and interpret survey, geotechnical and engineering information.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills and confidence in client-facing environments.
· Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
· ECSA Candidate Engineer registration advantageous; Pr Eng registration highly advantageous for more experienced candidates.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will combine practical engineering or construction judgement with disciplined documentation, professional communication and a strong understanding of how quality, cost, programme, safety and client expectations interact. Candidates should be able to demonstrate real examples of projects they have worked on, the stages or construction phases they personally contributed to, the reports or deliverables they prepared, and the decisions or responsibilities they carried.
