Role Overview

We are seeking a Civil Engineering Technician to support engineers and technologists on civil infrastructure projects from investigation and design through tender documentation, construction monitoring and close-out. The ideal candidate is methodical, technically strong, confident with drawings and site measurements, and able to maintain accurate engineering records.

Project Lifecycle / Stage Exposure

The successful candidate should understand how their role contributes to the broader project lifecycle. Depending on seniority and professional responsibility, this will include the following:

· Stages 1–2: assist with site investigations, measurements, data capture, preliminary layouts and feasibility information.

· Stage 3: prepare detailed drawings, profiles, sections, schedules, quantities and supporting calculations under supervision.

· Stage 4: assist with tender drawings, schedules of quantities, document control and issue of procurement documentation.

· Stage 5: perform site inspections, measurement checks, progress records, photographic reporting, snag identification and construction drawing updates.

· Stage 6: assist with as-built drawings, completion records, defects lists and project close-out files.

Key Responsibilities

· Prepare and revise engineering drawings and Civil 3D models.

· Capture survey information and assist with earthworks, roads, stormwater, water and sewer layouts.

· Prepare quantities, schedules and drawing registers.

· Assist with technical reports, site inspection reports and monthly progress information.

· Attend site meetings where required and record technical observations accurately.

· Check construction work against drawings and specifications under appropriate supervision.

· Assist with as-built surveys and drawing updates.

· Maintain organised project and QA documentation.

Technical Reporting & Communication

· Prepare, review or contribute to clear and professionally structured technical reports appropriate to the role and project stage.

· Maintain accurate written records of assumptions, decisions, design changes, instructions, inspections and outstanding actions.

· Attend client, consultant, contractor, authority and internal project meetings as required and communicate technical matters in plain, professional language.

· Escalate technical, commercial, programme or compliance risks promptly and support decisions with drawings, calculations, records or other evidence.

· Prepare concise progress updates and ensure agreed actions are tracked to closure.

Regulatory, Contractual & Standards Knowledge

· Basic understanding of ECSA technician competency requirements.

· Relevant municipal engineering standards and SANS specifications.

· OHS and Construction Regulations relevant to site activities.

· Drawing, document control and quality procedures.

Software / Technical Tools

· AutoCAD

· Civil 3D advantageous

· Microsoft Excel

· PDF/markup and document control tools

Minimum Requirements

· National Diploma/Diploma in Civil Engineering.

· 2–7 years of relevant experience.

· Ability to read civil engineering drawings and specifications.

· AutoCAD proficiency; Civil 3D advantageous.

· Good attention to detail and written reporting ability.

· ECSA registration advantageous.

· Valid driver’s licence advantageous.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will combine practical engineering or construction judgement with disciplined documentation, professional communication and a strong understanding of how quality, cost, programme, safety and client expectations interact. Candidates should be able to demonstrate real examples of projects they have worked on, the stages or construction phases they personally contributed to, the reports or deliverables they prepared, and the decisions or responsibilities they carried.
