GIBB Mining, a subsidiary of the GIBB Group, is looking for an experienced Roads Civil Supervisor to join the Coal Offloading Project site construction team. This is a specialist roads construction supervision role and proven roads construction experience is a mandatory requirement.

Key Responsibilities

• Environmental: Guide and support the Roads Contractor to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Programme (EMPr), Water Use Licence conditions and site environmental requirements.
• Health & Safety: Provide active and visible support to the HSE team in enforcing project HSE requirements, Sasol standards, permit-to-work requirements and safe road construction practices.
• Roads Construction Supervision: Provide full-time site supervision of the roads construction works, including bulk earthworks, cut-to-fill operations, roadbed preparation, pioneer and selected layers, layerworks, subgrade and subbase works, drainage, stormwater systems, kerbing, concrete pavement works, asphalt/surfacing and associated road infrastructure. The Supervisor must be capable of independently challenging and directing an experienced roads contractor on construction methodology, sequencing, quality and productivity.
• Quality Management: Monitor roadworks quality and compliance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), including material approvals, layer thicknesses, moisture conditioning, compaction, density testing, levels and survey controls. Identify non-conformances early and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Progress & Productivity Monitoring: Actively monitor contractor production against the approved construction programme, planned daily/weekly outputs, plant and labour deployment, access constraints and work fronts. Identify slippage early and support the Construction Manager and Planner with recovery actions.
• Reporting: Prepare concise daily and weekly roadworks reports covering progress, productivity, resources, constraints, quality, safety, risks, instructions and key decisions requiring management attention.
• Commercial Support: Verify completed roadwork quantities and measurements, maintain supporting site records and assist the Construction Manager and Commercial Team with payment assessments, variations, compensation events and contractor claims.
• Site Records & Contract Administration: Maintain accurate contemporaneous records of site conditions, instructions, delays, access constraints, weather impacts, tests, inspections, NCRs, field changes and other records required to manage contractor performance and potential claims.
• Contractor Management: Act as the day-to-day site interface with the contractor for the Roads package. Drive accountability for safety, quality, programme, productivity and compliance, and escalate performance concerns promptly to the Construction Manager.
• Interface Management: Coordinate Roads construction interfaces with bunker construction, water management, structural, mechanical, electrical, C&I and other project packages to avoid clashes and delays.
• Risk Management: Identify and proactively communicate road construction risks, geotechnical/ground-condition risks, schedule risks, quality concerns, access constraints and potential scope deviations.
• Handover: Manage roadworks punch-list close-out, quality records, as-built information and handover requirements for completed roads and associated civil infrastructure.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related construction field (National Diploma, BTech/BEng/BSc or equivalent).Experience

• Minimum 15 years' practical civil construction experience, with substantial hands-on experience specifically in roads construction. Roads construction experience is mandatory and candidates without demonstrable roads experience will not be considered.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in a Roads Civil Supervisor, Roads Construction Supervisor, Roads Site Agent, Roads Foreman or similar site-based leadership role on major roadworks, mining haul roads, heavy industrial roads or comparable heavy civil road infrastructure.
• Demonstrable experience supervising large roads contractors and managing high-volume earthworks and layerworks, including production, plant utilisation, quality control and programme performance.
• Experience on mining, petrochemical or brownfields industrial sites and under EPCM project execution models will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• The Roads Civil Supervisor will be responsible for the successful execution and day-to-day supervision of the CP003-5 Roads construction works associated with the Coal Offloading Project.
• The Roads Civil Supervisor will form part of the site construction management team and will be responsible for managing and supervising contractor performance on the Roads package, ensuring that the works are executed safely, to the required quality, in accordance with approved designs and specifications, and against the agreed construction programme.
• The role requires a strong, experienced roads construction practitioner who can confidently engage with and challenge WBHO at site level on construction methodology, sequencing, productivity, quality, resources, programme and recovery measures. The successful candidate must be capable of identifying emerging issues early and driving practical resolution with the contractor and project team.
• The position is site based and requires close interaction with Sasol Mining representatives, contractor, GIBB engineering disciplines, the Construction Manager, Planner, Commercial Team and other contractors working within the Coal Offloading Project.

This is not a general civil supervision position. Proven roads construction experience is a non-negotiable requirement.

Core Requirements

• Strong working knowledge of MS Office and construction reporting tools.
• Strong practical knowledge of road construction methods, earthworks, pavement layerworks, drainage, concrete pavements and asphalt/surfacing works.
• Sound understanding of road construction quality control, material testing, compaction requirements, survey/level control, ITPs and construction specifications.
• Willingness and ability to be site-based for the duration of the project.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and challenge a Tier 1 / major roads contractor on programme, productivity, construction methodology, quality and resource deployment.
• Ability to read and interpret road drawings, pavement details, specifications, BOQs, method statements and construction schedules.
• Ability to assess daily production rates, identify schedule slippage and drive practical recovery measures with the contractor.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Medically fit for work on mining and industrial construction sites.
