Job description
Background
As part of efforts to tackle high rates of tuberculosis (TB) in South Africa, we are conducting a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital stethoscope in TB screening in community settings. The study will be implemented in Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape.
We are seeking Community Health Workers to join the study team. The Community Health Workers will work closely with the project manager and digital x-ray screening teams to identify eligible participants, collect data, and conduct study procedures. Activities will involve travel across the district to TB screening sites and clinics or participant homes.
Responsibilities
- Perform and/or support digital stethoscope assessments of study participants to record lung sounds (training will be provided)
- Assist with participant recruitment, informed consent, and data collection
- Administer participant questionnaires and collect study data using electronic data capture platforms
- Liaise with screening teams to identify eligible individuals for auscultation
- Follow up with participants who test positive for TB and coordinate clinic or home visits, which may involve frequent district-wide travel and occasional after-hours or weekend appointments
- Ensure all study data and study procedures are accurately documented.
- Maintain strict adherence to study protocol and SOPs, and ethical requirements
- Perform routine quality checks on collected data and assist with resolving data queries
- Maintain confidentiality and secure documentation of all participant information
- Submit regular progress reports and contribute to achieving enrolment targets
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12
- At least 1 year of experience in participant recruitment, data collection, community health, clinical research, or a related field
- Ability to work independently and travel regularly within the district
- Basic familiarity with smartphones, tablets, or electronic data collection platforms
- Valid driver’s license
Advantageous
- Fluent in English and the predominant local language of the district
- Previous TB, HIV, community health, or clinical research training or experience
- Current GCP certification
- Experience working in or with public healthcare facilities
- Familiarity with Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas
