Community Outreach Worker

The Aurum Institute is seeking data collection fieldworkers to support the Bafokeng Health & Demographic Surveillance Node (BAMMISHO), a health and demographic surveillance site in the North West Province. BAMMISHO aims to assess the impact of mining and migration on socio-economic and health outcomes within the Royal Bafokeng Nation, situated in the Bojanala District, covering over 43,000 households and 100,000 residents across 29 villages.

To that end, the Aurum Institute is seeking diligent and committed Fieldworkers to support data collection activities. The successful candidates will be responsible for administering structured surveys and collecting data at participants' homesteads using electronic data collection tools.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct household visits to recruit and interview study participants.
• Administer study questionnaires and collect data using electronic devices (e.g., tablets).
• Ensure completeness, accuracy, and confidentiality of collected data.
• Report field challenges and participant concerns to supervisors promptly.
• Participate in community mobilization activities as needed.
• Perform basic quality checks and resolve data queries during or after field visits.
• Adhere to study protocols, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethical guidelines.
• Attend all relevant training sessions and team meetings.
• Maintain daily activity logs and submit timely reports to supervisors.
• Drive staff members to their respective workstations.

Education

• Grade 12 (Minimum requirement for candidates without a degree).

Added Advantages

• Prior experience in field-based data collection for research studies.
• Exposure to data management principles and handling of sensitive information.
• Familiarity with quality control procedures in field research.
• Certification or training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

Experience

• Experience using electronic data collection tools, such as Survey Solutions, REDCap, ODK, or SurveyCTO.

Minimum requirements

• Basic understanding of research methodologies, including participant recruitment and survey techniques.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel extensively within study sites and work flexible hours, including weekends.
• Fluency in Setswana and English.
• Code 10 driver’s licence with PDP or willing to acquire a PDP.
• A letter from your local chief (kgosana) as proof that you are a resident of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, also known as lekwalo la le kgotla or le kwalo la kgosana.

Assessment

• A competency-based interview, assessing relevant knowledge, skills, and proficiency, will be conducted by the BAMMISHO team to determine suitability for the assignment.
