Job description

JOB PURPOSE:

The Container Yard Manager is responsible for leading and optimizing the end-to-end operations of the container yard, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective flow of containers from port arrival to Distribution Centre delivery. This role drives operational excellence through effective yard planning, resource management, inventory accuracy, space optimization, and strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards, ensuring maximum throughput and a seamless Port-to-DC supply chain.The ideal candidate is a highly driven logistics professional who thrives in fast-paced operational environments and keeps the container yard running at peak performance. They will proactively manage complex yard operations, optimize costs, maintain inventory accuracy, and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders to maximize throughput to the Distribution Centre.

Success in this role requires a strong balance of operational excellence, safety leadership, and commercial acumen. The Container Yard Manager will drive productivity, reduce dwell times and logistics costs, and ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable flow of containers throughout the Port-to-DC supply chain while delivering continuous improvement and exceptional service levels.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Matric (Grade 12) is essential.
  • Bachelor's Degree or National Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transportation Management, Operations Management or a related field (essential)
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Certification in Health and Safety, Warehousing, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management is advantageous.
  • Minimum 5–8 years' experience in container yard, depot, port, terminal, logistics, transportation, warehousing, or supply chain operations.
  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a management or supervisory role leading operational teams within a high-volume logistics environment.
  • Proven experience managing container movements from port through inland distribution.
  • Demonstrated experience in cost control, budget management, and logistics optimization.
  • Strong understanding of container yard operations, container tracking systems, inventory control, and yard management principles.
  • Experience managing third-party logistics providers, transporters, shipping lines, and operational service providers.
  • Proven track record of driving operational efficiency, safety compliance, continuous improvement, and service excellence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, manage, and oversee all container yard operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of containers from port arrival through to Distribution Centre delivery.
  • Develop and execute operational plans to optimize yard capacity, storage utilization, equipment deployment, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure accurate container inventory management and maintain real-time visibility of all container movements within the yard.
  • Monitor and control container dwell times, ensuring timely extraction from port and efficient dispatch to the Distribution Centre.
  • Manage and coordinate all inbound and outbound container flows to maximize throughput and minimize operational bottlenecks.
  • Drive compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements, fostering a strong safety culture across the operation.
  • Lead, coach, and develop operational teams, contractors, and service providers to achieve performance, productivity, and service-level targets.
  • Manage relationships with transporters, shipping lines, port authorities, customs, depots, and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless operational execution.
  • Monitor key operational and financial performance indicators, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service delivery.
  • Control logistics and handling costs through effective planning, resource utilization, and supplier performance management.
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all operational systems, inventory records, and reporting processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, process optimization, waste reduction, and operational excellence.
  • Investigate operational incidents, service failures, and safety breaches, implementing corrective and preventative actions.
  • Develop contingency plans and manage operational risks to ensure business continuity and uninterrupted supply chain performance.
  • Prepare and present operational, financial, and performance reports to senior management, providing actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Ensure the Port-to-DC pipeline operates efficiently, safely, and reliably while consistently meeting customer and business requirements.

Cost Control & Financial Management

  • Drive cost optimization initiatives across the Port-to-DC supply chain by continuously identifying opportunities to reduce transport, handling, storage, detention, demurrage, equipment, and operational costs.
  • Manage and monitor the container yard operational budget, ensuring expenditure remains within approved targets while maintaining service levels.
  • Analyze logistics and yard performance data to identify cost-saving opportunities, eliminate inefficiencies, and improve resource utilization.
  • Implement controls and processes to minimize unnecessary container dwell time, detention, demurrage, and storage charges.
  • Track and report on key cost performance indicators, providing regular financial insights and recommendations to management.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance productivity, maximize asset utilization, and reduce overall supply chain costs without compromising safety or operational performance.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge of port, container depot, transportation, and supply chain operations.
  • Understanding of shipping, regulatory, and compliance requirements applicable to containerized cargo.
  • Advanced planning, scheduling, and resource allocation skills.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets, analyze costs, and deliver cost-saving initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Yard Management Systems (YMS), and Transport Management Systems (TMS),
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team development skills.
