Job description
Crochet Teacher (Part-Time) — Saturdays, Melville
Sew & Grow is a well-established sewing school in Melville, Johannesburg, with 40+ years of teaching experience and over 10,000 students taught. We're now expanding into crochet, and we're looking for a skilled, passionate crochet teacher to lead our new Saturday classes.
About the role
You'll teach crochet to students of all levels — from complete beginners picking up a hook for the first time, to more advanced crocheters refining their craft. This is a hands-on, in-person teaching role in a warm, encouraging studio environment.
What you'll do
- Teach crochet to students of all levels, from absolute beginner through to advanced
- Guide students through foundational stitches, reading patterns, shaping, and finishing
- Teach a variety of projects — accessories (scarves, beanies, bags), amigurumi, blankets and granny squares, and ideally wearable garments
- Help students read and follow written patterns and choose the right yarn and hooks
- Support students working at different paces with patience and encouragement
What we're looking for
- Solid, demonstrable crochet experience — you can show examples of what you've made
- A high level of crochet skill and competency. This is essential and non-negotiable, as you'll be teaching others
- The ability to teach from beginner level all the way through to advanced
- Confidence reading and following written crochet patterns
- Teaching or mentoring experience is preferred, but not essential
- Patience, clear communication, and a genuine passion for teaching
- This is an on-site role in Melville — you must be able to commute to the studio easily (ideally you live within roughly 10km)
Schedule & location
- Part-time, on-site at our Melville studio
- 3 hours every Saturday. The session will likely run in the morning, but the exact time (morning or afternoon) will be confirmed with the successful candidate — so you'll need to be available on Saturdays
Compensation
- R600 per session (each session is a 3-hour Saturday class)
- Additional compensation will be discussed at interview
Trial & probation
There is a paid trial period (likely up to one week), followed by a probation period. Full particulars are discussed at the interview.
How to apply
Apply directly through Indeed. In your application, please tell us briefly about your crochet experience, the levels you're confident teaching, and confirm that you're available on Saturdays.
Pay: From R600,00 per day
Application Question(s):
- Can you teach crochet from the very beginning all the way through to advanced levels? Elaborate
- What crochet have you done? Tell us about your experience with crochet and the projects you've made over the years.

- We're based in Melville — how close by are you, and can you commute on the days you're needed? (Candidates must be within a 10km radius.)
- Our classes run on Saturdays (exact time — morning or afternoon — to be confirmed). Please confirm that you're available on Saturdays.
