Data and Power BI Analyst / Developer

The Purpose of the Role

The Data & Power BI Analyst/Developer supports the organisation’s reporting and business intelligence needs by developing Power BI reports and dashboards, writing SQL queries, maintaining data models, and ensuring data quality. The role works closely with business and technical teams to deliver accurate insights that support reporting, decision-making, and continuous business improvement, including advanced analytics and AI-driven insights.

Power BI Report and Dashboard Development

• Set up and support the Power BI environment with Group IT.
• Develop, test, publish, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards.
• Create interactive visualisations and user-friendly reports.
• Build and maintain DAX measures, calculated columns, and data models.
• Optimise report performance and ensure data accuracy.
• Configure and monitor data refresh schedules.
• Apply reporting standards, templates, and governance practices.
• Support report deployment across development, testing, and production environments.
• Maintain report documentation and data source registers.
• Provide user support and guidance on report usage and interpretation

Data Extraction and SQL Development

• Develop and maintain SQL queries to extract, transform, validate, and analyse data.
• Support the development of database views, stored procedures, and reusable queries.
• Integrate and reconcile data from multiple systems and data sources.
• Investigate and resolve data quality issues, including missing, duplicate, and inconsistent data.
• Perform data reconciliations to ensure reporting accuracy and alignment with source systems.
• Optimise SQL queries and data retrieval processes to improve performance.
• Document data logic, transformation rules, and data dependencies.
• Adhere to database security, change management, and development standards

Data Preparation and Modelling

• Prepare, cleanse, and transform data from multiple approved sources.
• Support the development and maintenance of data models, including fact and dimension tables.
• Create and manage data relationships using data modelling best practices.
• Apply star-schema principles to ensure efficient and scalable reporting solutions.
• Maintain standard business measures, dimensions, and calculation logic.
• Ensure consistency in data definitions, naming conventions, formats, and data types

Data Quality and Validation

• Monitor and assess data quality by identifying anomalies, duplicates, missing values, and inconsistencies.
• Validate report data, calculations, and outputs against approved source systems.
• Develop and maintain data quality checks for critical reports and datasets.
• Investigate data discrepancies and support root-cause analysis and resolution.
• Escalate significant data quality issues to relevant stakeholders when required.
• Maintain data quality logs and track corrective actions to completion.
• Support the development and implementation of data quality standards, rules, and controls.
• Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of data used for reporting and analysis.

Education

• Matric / National Senior Certificate.
• Relevant Degree, Diploma, or Certification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Business Intelligence, Statistics, or a related field.
