PROFESSIONAL NURSE

Job Purpose As a Professional Nurse, you will render comprehensive primary health care services to students assessing, diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions, while also playing a key role in sexual and reproductive health care, minor medical procedures, and health promotion across campus.

Responsibilities The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Conduct physical assessments, diagnose illness, prescribe treatment and provide direct patient care, including virtual consultations where required
  • Perform health screenings (blood glucose, haemoglobin, urine, pregnancy, eye tests) and interpret results to guide treatment
  • Dispense prescribed medication and complete immunisations for relevant student groups
  • Provide sexual and reproductive health care, including family planning, contraception, HIV testing and gynaecological examinations
  • Conduct minor surgical procedures, wound care and emergency treatment in line with scope of practice
  • Support health awareness campaigns, seminars and training sessions for students
  • Maintain accurate patient records, manage stock, and ensure compliance with SANC and relevant health legislation
  • Mentor and supervise nursing interns

Minimum Requirements

  • 4-year Diploma/Degree in Nursing (General, Community Health, Psychiatry and Midwifery) AND a National/Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (Primary Health Care)
  • 3–5 years' experience in primary health care, including diagnosis and treatment of patients, pharmacological knowledge, sexual and reproductive health counselling, multi-professional teamwork and emergency clinical procedures
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • Family Planning Certificate and Certificate/License in Dispensing
  • Valid driver's license
  • Commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Empathy and sensitivity when working within a diverse student population
  • Sound judgement and composure in complex or high-pressure situations
  • Willingness to work on a rotational basis, including occasional overtime and weekends, and travel between campuses
  • High regard for confidentiality and professional integrity

Added Advantages And Preferences

  • Master’s degree in Nursing Science or Public Health
  • NIMART trained and certified
  • Prior experience working with young adults/students at a tertiary institution
  • Experience planning health care awareness campaigns
  • Certificate in HIV Counselling and First Aid
  • EPI certificate

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
