We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Deputy News Editor to support the News Editor in leading our newsroom operations. This pivotal role ensures the delivery of accurate, timely, and compelling news content across platforms, while upholding the highest editorial standards. The ideal candidate will bring strong editorial judgement, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of South Africa’s socio-political landscape.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial Oversight
- Plan and manage daily news coverage, assign stories, and make real-time editorial decisions.
- Edit scripts and bulletins for accuracy and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
Team Leadership
- Mentor junior staff, manage newsroom schedules, and act as News Editor when needed.
Digital & Multimedia
- Approve online content, contribute to digital strategy, and support cross-platform storytelling.
Compliance & Administration
- Maintain records and assist with regulatory reporting to BCCSA and ICASA.
Innovation & Strategy
- Identify opportunities for investigative journalism and stay updated on audience trends and tech.
- Ensures the maintenance of records for Industrial Relations processes.
Field Coordination
- Direct coverage during major events and liaise with field reporters for timely reporting.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Journalism or a related field.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior newsroom role.
- Strong knowledge of South African media law and ethics.
- Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
