Job description

1. POSITION OVERVIEW

The DevOps Engineer is responsible for designing, automating, securing, and maintaining the infrastructure, cloud environments, and CI/CD platforms that enable rapid, reliable, and secure software delivery across the organisation. The role ensures that development and operational processes are highly automated, scalable, resilient, and aligned with industry best practices while supporting engineering teams in delivering high-quality digital solutions.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

2.1 DevOps Engineering & Automation

· Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.

· Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration management using Infrastructure as Code tools including Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi.

· Standardise deployment processes to improve software delivery speed, consistency, and reliability.

· Support development teams by integrating automated build, testing, deployment, and release management processes.

· Continuously improve deployment efficiency, automation coverage, and engineering productivity.

2.2 Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Operations

· Deploy, manage, and optimise Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration platforms.

· Build, maintain, and support cloud infrastructure across AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

· Ensure platform scalability, availability, resilience, backup, disaster recovery, and performance optimisation.

· Implement monitoring, observability, and alerting solutions using technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, and OpenTelemetry.

· Maintain infrastructure documentation, operational procedures, and disaster recovery runbooks.

2.3 Security, Reliability & Continuous Improvement

· Implement DevSecOps practices including vulnerability scanning, secrets management, image scanning, SAST, and DAST.

· Ensure infrastructure complies with security standards, governance requirements, and identity and access management (IAM) best practices.

· Collaborate closely with Software Engineering, QA, Security, and Operations teams to improve platform reliability and service delivery.

· Troubleshoot infrastructure, deployment, and production issues while driving continuous improvement initiatives.

· Evaluate and recommend emerging DevOps tools and technologies that enhance operational excellence.

3. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

· Deployment frequency against agreed targets.

· Lead time for software changes.

· Change failure rate.

· Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR).

· Infrastructure and platform availability (99.9% or higher).

· Infrastructure automation coverage.

· Cloud platform performance and scalability.

· Security compliance and vulnerability remediation.

· CI/CD pipeline reliability and deployment success rate.

4. REQUIREMENTS

· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

· 3–8+ years' experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Cloud Engineering, or a similar role.

· Strong Linux systems administration experience.

· Proven experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Git, CI/CD platforms, Terraform, scripting (Bash/Python), networking, and cloud platforms.

· Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code and automation solutions.

· Working knowledge of security best practices, DevSecOps principles, and Identity & Access Management.

· Experience supporting enterprise-scale cloud environments is advantageous.

5. PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS

· Microsoft Azure Administrator

· AWS Solutions Architect

· Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

· Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

· Terraform Associate

· RHCSA / RHCE or equivalent Linux certifications

Education:

  • Bachelors (Preferred)

Experience:

  • DevOps and Cloud Engineering: 3 years (Required)

Location:

  • Johannesburg, Gauteng (Required)
