Diesel Mechanic Assistant

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanic Assistant to join our dynamic workshop team in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town.

The successful candidate will assist qualified mechanics with the inspection, maintenance, servicing and repair of our fleet, including buses, boats and company vehicles.

This role would suit a practical, proactive individual with a strong technical aptitude, attention to detail and a genuine willingness to learn and develop their mechanical skills in a fast-paced workshop environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist qualified diesel mechanics with vehicle inspections, fault-finding, servicing, maintenance and repairs.
• Assist with the preparation of vehicles for scheduled servicing and repairs.
• Ensure tools, equipment, parts and materials required for maintenance and repair work are readily available.
• Assist with preventative maintenance activities under the guidance and supervision of qualified mechanics.
• Support maintenance and repair work on buses, boats and company vehicles.
• Identify and report vehicle defects, irregularities and parts requirements to the Senior Artisan or Workshop Manager.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.
• Clean, maintain and store workshop tools and equipment appropriately.
• Adhere to all company health, safety and environmental procedures and requirements.
• Work collaboratively with the mechanical team to ensure work is completed efficiently and within required timeframes.
• Assist with breakdowns, emergency repairs and other workshop requirements as needed.
• Perform reasonable ad hoc duties in support of workshop operations.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifying Criteria

• Matric or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum 2 years' experience in a workshop or mechanical environment.
• Basic understanding of heavy-duty vehicles, buses or mechanical systems and maintenance.
• Practical aptitude and a strong interest in developing a career in the mechanical field.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to follow instructions accurately and work safely under supervision.
• Ability to work independently as well as effectively within a team.
• Strong work ethic, reliability and willingness to learn.
• Willingness to work overtime and assist with emergency repairs when required.

Advantageous

• N2 or equivalent qualification in Diesel Mechanics or a related trade.
• Code 8 or higher driver's licence.
• Previous experience working on heavy-duty vehicles or buses.
• Basic knowledge of workshop safety procedures and preventative maintenance.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: R70,00 - R76,00 per hour
