Responsible for providing strategic leadership and execution of all Project Commercial activities across AGA’s Organic Growth and Tailings capital project portfolio, spanning multiple regions and project types including, for example, mill expansions, infrastructure relocations, plant upgrades, TSF construction, TSF wall raises, and dry-stack facility builds. This role serves as the primary commercial interface and partner to Projects leadership (SVP Global Projects, VP Organic Growth, and VP Tailings), developing and executing portfolio-level commercial strategies while directly driving contracting, procurement, negotiations, and contractor management across priority projects. Will lead complex commercial negotiations, oversee end-to-end procurement execution (from strategy through P2P and post-award management). Will build a Project Commercial Organic Growth team and Project Commercial Tailings team (2-3 direct reports; full team of 15-20 Project Commercial associates), and embed capability foundations for long-term, repeatable success across AGA’s expanding project pipelines.
Key Accountabilities
Own the full spectrum of commercial accountability for the Organic Growth and Tailings capital project portfolio, encompassing governance, strategic oversight, and assurance of commercial outcomes.
Set and implement portfolio-wide commercial strategies, including contracting, sourcing, and procurement methodologies aligned with company goals and industry best practices.
Lead the most complex, high-value commercial negotiations and make critical contracting decisions that balance cost, risk, and project objectives.
Govern and prioritize commercial resource allocation, managing competing demands and aligning with stage-gate project milestones to maximize project success.
Act as the trusted senior commercial advisor to Project Delivery leadership and project teams from project inception through execution and handover.
Establish and grow the Project Commercial function for Organic Growth and Tailings, building a high-performing team of 15–20 commercial associates and 2–3 direct reports, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Drive collaboration with Category Management and the Supply Chain Total Cost of Ownership Advisory Committee (SCTOAC) to standardize equipment, goods, and services, ensuring investments achieve lowest total cost and operational efficiency.
Lead operational readiness planning in partnership with Site and Regional Operations to ensure smooth and safe project transitions into operational phases.
Develop and implement comprehensive commercial reporting frameworks and performance dashboards that provide transparent insights to executive stakeholders on portfolio performance, risk, and delivered value.
Champion a proactive safety culture by modeling safe behaviors, securing resources for safety initiatives, and continuously improving safety management systems within your team and projects.
Leadership and Team Development
Set a clear vision and high-performance standards for the commercial teams, driving world-class practices aligned with AngloGold Ashanti policies and professional standards.
Mentor and develop direct reports and wider commercial teams, fostering specialized expertise beyond transactional procurement towards strategic commercial leadership.
Promote a collaborative and innovative culture within the OneSC team and across project and functional partners to harness collective strengths.
Engage and influence executive and business unit leaders effectively to build consensus and alignment on commercial strategies and outcomes.
Technical Expertise and Commercial Execution
Lead the development of procurement strategies, including RFP creation, bidder evaluation, and contract award recommendations for major project packages such as EPCM selection, construction & engineering, fixed plant equipment, and specialist services.
Negotiate complex contracts directly, structuring terms to optimize cost-efficiency while mitigating risks and safeguarding project deliverables.
Oversee supplier qualification processes and strategic market engagement to build robust supply networks capable of supporting project demands.
Manage contract administration, including proactive handling of variations, claims, and dispute resolutions, ensuring accurate commercial data capture for benchmarking and continuous process enhancements.
Identify and capitalize on value opportunities within the portfolio, including risk reduction, cost avoidance, and savings, with rigorous quantification and tracking to demonstrate impact.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field; an MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is preferred.
Over 15 years of progressive experience in commercial and procurement leadership within major or mega capital projects, preferably in mining or heavy industry sectors.
Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role overseeing commercial strategy and execution across complex project portfolios.
