About the Role

We are looking for a reliable, hardworking and versatile Driver / Front of Shop & General Assistant to join our team.

This is a varied role that combines delivery driving, customer service, front-of-shop duties, collection of materials and general assistance across our business.

The successful candidate must be someone who is comfortable being busy and taking on different responsibilities throughout the day. While deliveries are an important part of the position, deliveries do not take up the entire working day. When not out on deliveries, the successful candidate will work in our front-of-shop area, assist customers, help with general tasks and support our workshop and other departments where required.

We are looking for someone who is friendly, presentable, responsible, physically capable, good with people and comfortable working around animals.

Key ResponsibilitiesDelivery Driver

• Deliver orders to customers and clients safely, professionally and on time.
• Load and secure products correctly before leaving the premises.
• Ensure products are handled carefully during loading, transportation and unloading.
• Communicate professionally with customers when making deliveries.
• Obtain delivery confirmations/signatures where required.
• Maintain a clean and presentable company vehicle.
• Conduct basic vehicle checks and report any mechanical or maintenance issues.
• Ensure the vehicle is driven responsibly and in accordance with road laws and company requirements.
• Plan delivery routes efficiently and manage delivery schedules.

Front of Shop & Customer Service

• Assist customers when they visit the shop.
• Welcome customers in a friendly and professional manner.
• Assist customers with general product enquiries.
• Help customers locate products and provide basic information about our range.
• Assist with loading customer purchases where required.
• Keep the front-of-shop area clean, tidy and presentable.
• Assist with displaying and organising products.
• Help receive and organise stock when required.
• Provide general assistance to the sales/front-of-shop team.

Raw Material & Workshop Collections

• Collect timber, hardware, packaging and other raw materials and supplies for our workshops when required.
• Collect stock and materials from suppliers.
• Load and unload materials safely.
• Check that collected materials match the collection requirements before leaving suppliers.
• Deliver materials to the correct workshop or storage area.
• Assist with moving and organising materials around the premises.
• Be willing to assist with general workshop-related tasks when required.

Animal-Related Duties

Our business also works with live animals, including animals involved in import and export.

The successful candidate may be required to:

• Assist with the safe movement and handling of animals when required.
• Assist with preparing animals for collection, transport or export.
• Take clear photographs of live animals for records, clients and/or marketing purposes.
• Assist with general animal-related tasks.
• Work calmly and responsibly around dogs and other animals.
• Treat all animals with care and respect.

Previous experience working with animals is advantageous, but not essential. A genuine comfort around animals and a responsible attitude are important.

General Assistant Duties

When not driving or assisting customers, you will be expected to assist wherever required.

This may include:

• General cleaning and housekeeping.
• Organising stock and materials.
• Assisting with loading and unloading.
• Moving products around the premises.
• Preparing orders for delivery.
• Assisting workshop staff with general non-skilled tasks.
• Packing and organising products.
• Helping maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
• Assisting other departments when required.
• Carrying out other reasonable duties that contribute to the smooth running of the business.

Requirements

Essential:

• Valid South African driver's licence.
• Good driving record.
• Previous driving/delivery experience.
• Good knowledge of the Benoni / East Rand / Johannesburg and surrounding areas.
• Good communication and customer-service skills.
• Reliable and punctual.
• Honest and trustworthy.
• Neat and presentable.
• Physically fit and able to load and unload products and materials.
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
• Able to follow instructions and complete tasks without constant supervision.
• Comfortable working around animals.
• Willing to perform a variety of duties throughout the day.

Advantageous:

• Previous experience in a delivery driver, general assistant, warehouse, retail or similar role.
• Experience working with timber, building materials or workshop environments.
• Experience handling animals.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
• Good knowledge of GPS/navigation and route planning.
• Previous customer-facing experience.
• Experience taking photographs for business or marketing purposes.

The Type of Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is not afraid to work and understands that this is a varied hands-on position.

You may start the morning loading a delivery vehicle, spend part of the day making deliveries, return to assist customers in the shop, collect timber from a supplier and later help organise stock or assist with animals.

We need someone who sees what needs to be done and gets on with it, rather than someone who only wants to perform one specific task.

Important

This is not a driving-only position.

Deliveries are an important part of the job, but when there are no deliveries scheduled, the successful candidate will be expected to assist with front-of-shop duties, customer service, material collections, stock handling, animal-related tasks and general assistance.

Applicants must therefore be comfortable with a multi-purpose role and be willing to get involved wherever required.
