Job description
1. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Driver is responsible for the safe, reliable and professional collection and transportation of used cooking oil, grease-trap waste and related containers between customer sites and Oil Drop WC facilities.
The role includes driving company vehicles, loading and offloading containers, completing delivery and collection documentation accurately, interacting professionally with customers, handling cash or other authorised payments where required, and ensuring that company vehicles and equipment are kept clean, safe and roadworthy.
The position requires a high level of honesty, reliability, physical fitness and attention to detail, as drivers represent Oil Drop WC directly at customer premises.
2. LICENCE REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must hold:
- A valid South African Code 8 / Code B driver's licence for vehicles falling within the applicable licence category; and/or
- Or a valid Code 10 / Code C1 driver's licence for the applicable company vehicles.
- A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) where required for the vehicle and duties being performed.
- A valid licence appropriate for towing a trailer where trailer towing forms part of the employee's duties.
The employee is responsible for ensuring that their driver's licence and PDP remain valid and must immediately notify management of any suspension, restriction, expiry or other change affecting their legal ability to drive.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Driving & Collections
- Safely operate company vehicles on scheduled collection and delivery routes.
- Collect used cooking oil from restaurants, takeaways, hotels, retailers and other customers.
- Perform grease-trap collections where assigned and appropriately equipped.
- Deliver clean or empty oil containers/drums and collect full containers.
- Load, secure, transport and offload oil drums, containers and other materials safely.
- Follow allocated routes and daily schedules and communicate delays or collection problems promptly.
- Ensure collected products are transported safely and without unnecessary spillage or contamination.
- Return collected oil and documentation to the designated Oil Drop WC facility.
Delivery Notes & Record Keeping
- Complete all delivery notes, collection notes and other documentation accurately and legibly.
- Confirm the correct customer/account before recording a collection or delivery.
- Accurately record quantities collected, including the number and type of containers or drums.
- Record any spent-oil returns, container exchanges or discrepancies correctly.
- Obtain the customer's name and signature where required as proof of collection/delivery.
- Record arrival and departure times where required.
- Ensure documentation corresponds with the actual collection or delivery completed.
- Submit all delivery notes, cash, payment records and supporting documents at the end of the route or as instructed.
Falsifying delivery notes, customer signatures, quantities, collections, payments or any company record is considered serious misconduct.
Customer Service
- Represent Oil Drop WC professionally and courteously at all times.
- Maintain positive relationships with customers and their staff.
- Follow customer site rules, security requirements and access procedures.
- Communicate collection problems, customer complaints or requests to management.
- Do not make unauthorised commitments regarding pricing, credits, refunds or account balances.
Cash & Payment Handling
Where authorised to receive customer payments:
- Accept only approved payment methods.
- Issue or obtain the required proof of payment.
- Accurately record the customer and invoice/account to which a payment relates.
- Safeguard company cash and immediately report discrepancies.
- Hand all cash and supporting documentation to the authorised person in accordance with company procedures.
Company or customer funds may never be borrowed, withheld, redirected or used for personal purposes.
4. VEHICLE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Driver is responsible for the company vehicle allocated to them while it is under their control.
This includes:
- Conducting basic pre-trip checks before commencing the day's route.
- Checking tyres, lights, indicators, mirrors, oil, coolant and other basic safety items.
- Checking that drums, containers, pumps, hoses and other equipment are safely secured.
- Keeping the vehicle cab and load area reasonably clean and organised.
- Reporting warning lights, mechanical problems, tyre damage or other defects immediately.
- Reporting accidents, collisions or damage immediately to management.
- Complying with company accident-reporting and insurance procedures.
- Never permitting an unauthorised person to drive a company vehicle.
- Never using a company vehicle for unauthorised personal purposes.
5. ROAD SAFETY
Drivers must:
- Comply with all applicable South African road traffic laws.
- Drive responsibly and according to road, weather and traffic conditions.
- Observe speed limits.
- Wear a seatbelt and ensure passengers do so.
- Never use a handheld mobile phone while driving.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that impairs safe driving.
- Never drive when dangerously fatigued or medically unfit to do so.
- Ensure loads are properly positioned and secured before travelling.
- Follow lawful vehicle weight and towing limitations.
Traffic fines resulting from the driver's own unlawful driving conduct may be dealt with in accordance with company policy and applicable employment law.
6. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate should have:
- Valid Code 8/Code B or Code 10/Code C1 driver's licence, depending on the position.
- Valid PrDP/PDP where required.
- Appropriate licence endorsement where towing is required.
- Previous professional driving experience preferred.
- Good knowledge of Cape Town, the Northern Suburbs, Winelands and surrounding Western Cape routes advantageous.
- Ability to use GPS/navigation applications.
- Ability to read and complete delivery notes accurately.
- Basic numeracy skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and management.
- Ability to use WhatsApp or other company-approved communication tools for operational purposes.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including handling containers and equipment, subject to safe handling requirements.

8. WORKING HOURS & OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Working hours will be determined according to operational and collection requirements.
The position may require:
- Early-morning starts.
- Travel throughout the Western Cape.
- Occasional overtime where operationally required.
- Weekend or public-holiday work where agreed or operationally necessary.
- Unscheduled or emergency customer collections where required.
