Electrical / Mechanical Technician

Wellington, Western Cape, Permanent, full-time

AGI Frost Fans designs, installs and maintains frost protection equipment for the agricultural sector, locally and internationally. We are looking for a qualified electrical / mechanical technician to install, commission and service that equipment in the field, and to contribute to our research and development work.

This is a hands-on, travel-intensive role for someone who is self-driven, comfortable making decisions on site, and able to lead a small team.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Please read this section carefully before applying. Travel is the single biggest demand of this position.

• Significant travel is involved for at least six months of the year, both within South Africa and abroad.
• International destinations currently include Canada, US, New Zealand, SADC and Europe with trips typically lasting several weeks at a time.
• A valid, passport is required, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
• Extended working hours are required during peak installation and frost seasons.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Installing, commissioning, maintaining and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment on client sites.
• Working at height on wind machine towers and associated structures.
• Fault-finding on three-phase installations, control panels and variable frequency drives.
• Performing factory acceptance testing on new equipment before dispatch.
• Supervising and coordinating site staff and subcontractors during installations.
• Reporting on technical issues, site progress and client feedback to management.
• Contributing actively to research and development projects.
• Applying world-class manufacturing principles in the workshop and on site.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Trade-tested (Red Seal) electrician or millwright, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
• At least five years' experience in electrical and mechanical repairs and installations.
• Sound electrical knowledge, including fault-finding, three-phase circuits and VFDs.
• Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and technical drawings.
• Competent mechanical skills.
• Valid Code B driver's licence and own reliable transport.
• Proficiency in Afrikaans and English, written and spoken. Both are required for daily communication with clients in the farming community and with management.
• Medically fit to work at height and to travel internationally for extended periods.
• Resident in the Western Cape, preferably within commuting distance of Wellington or Paarl.

ADVANTAGEOUS

• PLC programming or fault-finding experience.
• Forklift and plant equipment licences.
• Working-at-height certification.
• Knowledge of the agricultural industry.
• Good report-writing ability.
