JOB PURPOSE:

To ensure the reliable and safe functioning of all electrical systems, equipment, and installations within the facility by performing preventative and corrective maintenance, installations, and troubleshooting. The Electrician contributes to minimizing production downtime, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and supporting continuous operations in a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment.

MAIN TASKS / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preventative and Corrective Maintenance

§ Execute daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance as per approved schedules

§ Identify potential failures and proactively carry out corrective action to avoid breakdowns

§ Document all maintenance activities in job cards and maintenance management systems

Fault Finding and Repairs

§ Perform fault finding on complex electrical circuits, control panels, and machinery

§ Repair or replace faulty components such as sensors, relays, switches, motors, and drives

§ Troubleshoot and repair AC/DC drives and program or set drive parameters

PLC and Control Systems

§ Assist with the programming, setup, and modification of PLCs

§ Work with engineering teams to integrate, test, and optimize control systems

Electro-Pneumatic and HVAC Systems

§ Repair and maintain electro-pneumatic control systems used in manufacturing equipment

§ Support the maintenance of HVAC systems where applicable, including air handlers, filters, and control circuits

Electrical Installations and Projects

§ Perform new wiring installations and upgrades to panels and distribution boards

§ Build, test, and install control panels based on technical drawings

§ Ensure all installations comply with legal and safety requirements

Building and Facility Electrical Systems

§ Maintain lighting systems, backup power, emergency lighting, and general facility power distribution

§ Respond to breakdowns affecting building services (e.g. lifts, gates, compressors)

Compliance and Safety

§ Work in accordance with OHSA, GMP, and electrical safety standards

§ Complete job risk assessments prior to tasks

§ Use proper PPE and follow safe work practices at all times

Qualifications § N6 Certificate in Electrical Engineering – Essential

§ Trade Test Certificate as a Qualified Electrician or Millwright – Essential

§ Valid Wireman’s License – Advantageous

§ Additional certifications in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), HVAC, or MV systems – Advantageous Experience § Minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in electrical maintenance within a pharmaceutical, food, or beverage manufacturing environment – Essential

§ Proven experience with preventative and breakdown maintenance on production machinery and building systems

§ Practical knowledge in working with AC/DC drives, electro-pneumatics, wiring, panel building, and PLC-controlled systems

§ Experience in HVAC and Medium Voltage (MV) systems – Advantageous Other § Ability and willingness to work rotational shifts, standby, and attend to emergency call-outs

§ Physically fit and capable of working in elevated, confined, or noisy environments

§ Must have own reliable transport

§ Must comply with occupational health and safety regulations and adhere to lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures

§ Competence in reading and interpreting technical diagrams and electrical schematics

§ Sound knowledge of the Electrical Installation Regulations (SANS 10142)
