Job description
About LexEco
LexEco is an environmental, legal, regulatory and governance advisory business supporting organisations operating in highly regulated industries.
We work particularly with industrial, recycling, waste-management and mining businesses, helping them understand and manage their environmental, health and safety, licensing, corporate-governance and broader regulatory obligations.
LexEco is expanding its service offering to integrate environmental consulting with legal, regulatory, corporate-governance and compliance advisory services. We are looking for an ambitious professional who can help build and operate this division.
The role
The Environmental Regulatory and Governance Advisor will assist clients in identifying, understanding and managing the legal, regulatory and governance requirements applicable to their operations.
This is not a narrowly defined legal-research position. The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of assignments, manage deliverables, maintain compliance systems and help clients convert legal and regulatory requirements into practical operational actions.
The role will also provide exposure to corporate-governance frameworks and ISO-based management systems, particularly those relevant to environmental management, occupational health and safety, quality and compliance.
The position is suited to someone who combines legal or commercial ability with strong organisation, sound judgment and a genuine interest in how industrial businesses operate.
Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Research and interpret environmental, mining, waste, occupational health and safety, corporate and related regulatory requirements.
Prepare and maintain legal and compliance registers.
Conduct regulatory and compliance assessments for industrial, recycling, waste-management and mining operations.
Identify licences, permits, authorisations and reporting obligations applicable to clients.
Assist with environmental, regulatory and corporate-governance due-diligence investigations.
Review governance structures, delegations of authority, policies, committee terms of reference and compliance responsibilities.
Assist clients with board and management compliance processes.
Draft legal opinions, compliance reports, governance documents, policies, procedures and client correspondence.
Support the development, implementation and review of ISO-aligned management systems.
Assist with ISO gap assessments, internal compliance reviews, corrective-action registers and audit preparation.
Track legislative, regulatory, governance and standards-related developments and communicate relevant changes to clients.
Help clients develop practical corrective-action and compliance implementation plans.
Manage tasks, deadlines, client information and project records accurately.
Coordinate with environmental specialists, attorneys, consultants, auditors, certification bodies, regulators and client operational teams.
Take ownership of assignments from instruction through to final delivery.
Help develop LexEco’s legal, regulatory, governance and ISO advisory services, systems, precedents and client offering.
Minimum requirements
Applicants must have:
An LLB, BCom Law or another relevant legal, commercial, governance or compliance qualification.
A demonstrated interest in environmental law, regulatory compliance, corporate governance or regulated industries.
Strong legal and regulatory research skills.
Clear, accurate and commercially focused writing ability.
Excellent organisation and attention to detail.
The ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines.
The confidence to take responsibility for work and follow assignments through to completion.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to work effectively with digital task and document-management systems.
The right to work in South Africa.
Advantageous experience
Preference may be given to candidates with experience or exposure in one or more of the following:
Environmental or regulatory law.
Corporate governance, company secretarial work or board-support functions.
Governance frameworks, policies, delegations of authority and committee structures.
ISO-based management systems, audits or certification processes.
ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems.
ISO 9001 quality management systems.
ISO 37301 compliance management systems.
Mining, manufacturing or industrial operations.
Waste management, recycling or the circular economy.
Environmental authorisations and licensing.
Waste-management licences, water-use licences or atmospheric-emission licences.
Occupational health and safety or SHE compliance.
Compliance registers, regulatory audits or due diligence.
Engagement with regulators and other public authorities.
Admission as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
Admission as an attorney and formal ISO auditor or implementation training are advantageous but are not requirements.
The person we are looking for
The right person will be:
Highly organised and reliable.
Strong operationally and able to convert advice into action.
Comfortable working independently.
Proactive rather than dependent on constant instruction.
Accountable for deadlines and outcomes.
Curious about industrial and commercial operations.
Able to understand how legal, governance and management-system requirements operate together.
Able to identify problems, propose solutions and escalate risks early.
Comfortable building systems and improving how work is delivered.
Commercially minded without compromising legal, regulatory or governance accuracy.
We are not looking for someone who only completes isolated research tasks. We are looking for someone who wants to take ownership of a growing function and help shape LexEco’s legal, regulatory, governance and ISO advisory offering.
What LexEco offers
Exposure to environmental, industrial, recycling and mining businesses.
Work at the intersection of law, compliance, corporate governance, environmental management and commercial operations.
Practical exposure to ISO-aligned management systems and compliance auditing.
Responsibility and client exposure from an early stage.
The opportunity to help build a growing legal, regulatory and governance advisory division.
A practical, entrepreneurial working environment where initiative is valued.
Pay: R239 152,59 - R993 778,95 per year
Work Location: In person
