Job description

Senior Accounting | Financial Reporting | Reconciliations | Controls

We are looking for a Financial Accountant to join our finance team in a fast-paced, transaction-driven environment. This role is suited to an experienced accounting professional who enjoys working with high-volume transactions, financial controls, reconciliations, reporting and process improvement.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information, maintaining strong financial controls, supporting regulatory compliance, and providing meaningful financial insights to management.

Experience in a POS, payments, retail, e-commerce or fintech environment will be highly advantageous.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Accounting & Month-End

  • Prepare and review monthly management accounts and financial reporting packs.
  • Process and review month-end journals, accruals and adjustments.
  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with IFRS.
  • Review inventory journals, stock adjustments and cost-of-sales movements.
  • Review Shopify and other transactional clearing accounts.
  • Review bank reconciliations and cash movements before month-end sign-off.
  • Review payroll journals and reconciliations from SimplePay.
  • Review VAT reconciliations and support tax compliance requirements.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation and provide supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Review supplier and debtor age analysis.
  • Monitor inventory clearing accounts, cost of sales and gross profit margins.

POS, Payments & Transaction Reconciliations

  • Reconcile high-volume POS transactions and merchant settlements.
  • Review payment clearing and settlement accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciliation differences and unusual transactions.
  • Monitor chargebacks, refunds and related financial impacts.
  • Review high-risk reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items.
  • Drive alignment between accounting systems and transactional platforms.

Inventory & Stock Control

  • Review stock count reports and investigate variances.
  • Review inventory adjustment journals and stock movements.
  • Review production and manufacturing-related stock movements.
  • Review warehouse reconciliations.
  • Monitor inventory accuracy and investigate discrepancies between operational and financial records.
  • Coordinate annual cost updates.
  • Analyse product profitability and bill of materials.

Reporting & Financial Analysis

  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packs for management.
  • Perform sales analysis across all branches.
  • Analyse gross profit and product margins.
  • Review branch profitability and performance.
  • Perform variance analysis and investigate material movements.
  • Provide financial insights to support management decision-making.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.

Financial Controls & Approvals

  • Review journals prior to posting.
  • Approve supplier reconciliations.
  • Review commissions prior to payment.
  • Review payroll reconciliations.
  • Review and approve refunds in line with company controls.
  • Review high-risk and key balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Identify control weaknesses and recommend corrective actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes and controls.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will be a technically strong accountant who is comfortable operating in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment and has a strong eye for detail.

You should have:

  • A relevant accounting qualification, such as BCom Accounting, BCompt, SAIPA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent.
  • At least 3–5 years' relevant financial accounting experience, preferably in a high-volume or transactional environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and IFRS.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing management accounts.
  • Strong reconciliation and month-end accounting experience.
  • Experience with inventory, stock control and cost-of-sales accounting.
  • Experience with VAT and audit processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent Excel skills and confidence working with large volumes of transactional data.
  • Experience working with ERP/accounting systems and transactional platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of financial accuracy.
  • The ability to investigate discrepancies and see issues through to resolution.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across finance and operational teams.

Advantageous Experience

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

  • POS and payment processing environments
  • Shopify or e-commerce platforms
  • Fintech or transaction-driven businesses
  • Merchant settlements and payment clearing
  • Chargebacks and refunds
  • Inventory/manufacturing environments
  • SimplePay
  • Branch-level profitability analysis
  • High-volume reconciliations
