JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Finishing Foreman

Department: Construction Operations

Reports To: Site Manager / Construction Manager

Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Employment Type: Permanent / Fixed-Term (Project Based)

JOB PURPOSE

The Finishing Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating all finishing activities on construction projects to ensure that work is completed to the required quality standards, within programme, and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, health and safety regulations, and company procedures. The incumbent will oversee subcontractors and labour teams, ensuring that all finishing works are delivered efficiently and defects are minimized before project handover.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Site Supervision

  • Supervise all finishing activities on site.
  • Coordinate the daily activities of subcontractors and labour teams.
  • Ensure work is carried out according to approved construction drawings and specifications.
  • Allocate work to teams and monitor productivity.
  • Ensure sufficient labour, materials, tools and equipment are available.
  • Conduct daily inspections of work areas.
  • Monitor workmanship to ensure compliance with project quality standards.
  • Ensure project milestones are achieved within the approved construction programme.

Finishing Works Coordination

Supervise and coordinate all finishing works including but not limited to:

  • Internal and external plastering
  • Screeding
  • Painting
  • Tiling
  • Waterproofing
  • Ceiling installation
  • Partitioning
  • Joinery
  • Carpentry
  • Roofing finishes
  • Aluminium installations
  • Doors and ironmongery
  • Window installations
  • Glazing
  • Floor finishes
  • Paving
  • Kerbing
  • Boundary walls
  • Final snagging
  • External finishes
  • Cleaning for practical completion, etc.

Quality Control

  • Inspect all completed work before requesting formal inspections.
  • Ensure all work complies with project specifications and SANS standards.
  • Identify defects and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Prepare snag lists and ensure timely close-out.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship throughout the project.
  • Ensure materials used comply with approved specifications.
  • Prevent rework through continuous quality monitoring.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks where required.
  • Ensure all employees wear the required PPE.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained.
  • Promote a safe working environment at all times.

Labour Management

  • Supervise artisans, labourers and subcontractors.
  • Monitor attendance and productivity.
  • Report absenteeism and disciplinary issues.
  • Mentor junior employees where required.
  • Ensure teams understand daily production targets.

Material Management

  • Monitor material usage.
  • Prevent wastage.
  • Verify deliveries.
  • Report shortages immediately.
  • Ensure materials are stored correctly.
  • Assist with forecasting material requirements.

Programme Management

  • Ensure finishing activities remain on schedule.
  • Coordinate work between different trades.
  • Resolve workflow conflicts.
  • Report delays immediately.
  • Assist with recovery plans where programme slippage occurs.

Reporting

Prepare and submit:

  • Daily progress reports
  • Labour reports
  • Material requirement reports
  • Quality reports
  • Snagging reports
  • Productivity reports
  • Health and Safety observations
  • Weekly progress updates

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • National Certificate in Building Construction or related qualification will be advantageous.
  • Trade qualification will be advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Finishing Foreman within the building construction industry.
  • Proven experience on commercial, residential and government infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing multiple subcontractors.
  • Strong understanding of construction finishing processes.
  • Experience with quality inspections and snagging.
  • Experience delivering projects through to practical completion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Based on active construction sites.

  • Frequent walking, climbing and standing on construction sites.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Travel between project sites may be required.

REMUNERATION

Market-related and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
