Job Type: Freelance / Independent Contractor Hours: Flexible / Part-time
Compensation: 10%–15% commission-basedStart: As soon as possible
About TradeUbuntu
TradeUbuntu is a South African startup focused on helping trades and construction businesses build stronger brands and grow their presence online.
We aim to work with businesses such as plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, painters and other skilled trades professionals by helping them showcase their work through professional content and digital marketing.
We are currently at an early stage, building the TradeUbuntu brand and growing our client base.
We’re looking for a creative, confident and ambitious person who would like to join us at the beginning of that journey.
This is not a traditional 9–5 position. We’re looking for someone who is excited about social media, content creation, entrepreneurship and the opportunity to help build something from the ground up.
The right person will have the opportunity to become one of the recognizable faces of TradeUbuntu.
The Role
We’re looking for a Social Media & Content Creator who can help us build TradeUbuntu’s presence online and document our journey as we grow.
You will initially focus on creating content for TradeUbuntu itself.
As we acquire clients, the role may expand to include creating content and managing social media for our clients.
You will work closely with the founder to develop TradeUbuntu’s content strategy and bring creative ideas to life.
Phase 1: Building the TradeUbuntu Brand
Because we’re still growing our client base, your initial focus will be on TradeUbuntu’s own content.
This may include:
- Creating TikTok, Instagram Reels and Facebook content
- Appearing in videos as a representative of TradeUbuntu
- Creating a “Day in the Life” series documenting the journey of building TradeUbuntu
- Creating behind-the-scenes content
- Introducing TradeUbuntu and explaining what we do
- Creating educational content about marketing and social media for trades businesses
- Interviewing business owners and tradespeople
- Visiting local businesses and networking opportunities to create content, where appropriate
- Documenting the process of building relationships with potential clients
- Creating content around the challenges and wins of building a startup
- Developing creative campaigns to attract trades businesses to TradeUbuntu
- Helping plan and manage TradeUbuntu’s social media content calendar
- Editing short-form videos using CapCut or similar software
- Posting and managing content across relevant social media platforms
You will help us document the journey from startup to established business.
Phase 2: Working With TradeUbuntu Clients
As TradeUbuntu begins acquiring paying clients, your responsibilities may expand.
Depending on your skills and agreed responsibilities, you may assist with:
- Creating social media content for clients
- Visiting client locations or job sites to film content
- Filming before-and-after projects
- Creating short-form videos and Reels
- Taking photos and videos of completed work
- Interviewing business owners
- Creating educational content for clients
- Managing client social media accounts
- Planning client content calendars
- Communicating with clients about content requirements
- Coordinating content shoots
- Helping develop social media strategies for clients
Important: Client-facing work will only begin as TradeUbuntu acquires clients and as responsibilities are agreed upon.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Confident and comfortable speaking on camera
- Naturally outgoing and able to connect with people
- Creative and full of ideas
- Comfortable using TikTok, Instagram and Facebook
- Interested in social media and digital marketing
- Able to create engaging short-form content
- Familiar with video editing apps such as CapCut or similar
- Reliable and able to meet agreed deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Professional when communicating with business owners
- Comfortable approaching people and starting conversations
- Interested in entrepreneurship and startups
- Willing to learn and grow with the company
- Available to occasionally attend in-person meetings, networking opportunities or client shoots in the future when required
Professional experience is not essential.
If you’re a student, recent graduate, aspiring content creator or someone who has been creating content independently, we encourage you to apply.
We’re more interested in your personality, creativity, communication skills, reliability and willingness to learn than in having a long list of qualifications.
This Opportunity May Be For You If…
You enjoy creating content and being in front of the camera.
You see a business and immediately start thinking of ways to make its social media better.
You’re comfortable approaching people and having conversations.
You don’t need someone constantly checking on you to get things done.
You want to learn how businesses are built.
And most importantly, you’re excited about the idea of joining a company at the beginning, rather than waiting until everything is already established.
Compensation
TradeUbuntu is currently an early-stage startup and is actively building its client base.
Because we are still in this early stage, this position does not currently offer a fixed salary or guaranteed monthly income.
The position is structured as a freelance independent contractor opportunity with commission-based compensation.
The initial commission structure will be:
10% commission
The contractor will receive 10% of net revenue actually received by TradeUbuntu from clients they directly manage and provide agreed services for.
Up to 15% commission
The commission may increase to 15% depending on the contractor’s responsibilities and level of involvement.
For example, the higher commission rate may apply where the contractor is responsible for a combination of:
- Creating the client’s content
- Managing the client’s social media
- Developing the client’s content strategy
- Coordinating content shoots
- Managing ongoing client communication
- Taking responsibility for the client’s social media presence
The exact commission rate and responsibilities will be agreed upon before the contractor begins working on a client account.
Important: Commission is calculated on money actually received by TradeUbuntu from the relevant client. Commission is not earned simply because a client signs a contract or receives an invoice.
Payment terms, commission calculations and responsibilities will be set out in an Independent Contractor Agreement.
What You Can Gain
By joining TradeUbuntu at this early stage, you will have the opportunity to:
- Build a professional content portfolio
- Gain real-world experience in social media marketing
- Learn how a startup is built from the ground up
- Work directly with South African trades and construction businesses as the company grows
- Develop your on-camera and communication skills
- Gain experience working with business owners
- Help shape the TradeUbuntu brand and online presence
- Potentially become one of the faces of the TradeUbuntu brand
- Grow your responsibilities as the company grows
- Increase your earning potential as you take on more responsibility and help generate revenue
Mandatory Video Introduction
A video introduction is REQUIRED to apply for this position.
Please submit a 30–60 second video introducing yourself and answering:
- Who are you?
- Why are you interested in joining TradeUbuntu?
- Why do you think you’d be a good fit for this role?
- What interests you about social media, content creation or marketing?
The video does not need to be professionally filmed or edited.
You can record it on your phone.
