About the Role

We are looking for a reliable and hardworking General Worker to support our carpentry and exhibition team.

The successful candidate will work alongside carpenters and the wider project team, assisting with the construction, installation, setup and breakdown of exhibition stands.

The role is based at our workshop in Beaconvale, with travel to exhibition venues and client sites when required. This is a hands-on position that requires physical fitness, reliability and a willingness to work flexible hours according to exhibition schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist carpenters with the construction and assembly of exhibition stands.
  • Assist with preparing materials and components in the workshop.
  • Move, carry, load and unload materials, tools and equipment.
  • Assist with transporting materials between the workshop and exhibition venues.
  • Help with the setup and installation of exhibition stands at venues.
  • Assist with dismantling and breaking down exhibition stands after events.
  • Help pack and organise materials and equipment after breakdowns.
  • Assist with basic manual tasks under the direction of carpenters and supervisors.
  • Keep the workshop, work areas and exhibition sites clean and organised.
  • Collect and organise tools and materials as instructed.
  • Assist with general site preparation and housekeeping.
  • Follow instructions from carpenters, supervisors and project managers.
  • Follow all company, client and venue health and safety requirements.
  • Take care of company tools, equipment and materials.
  • Assist the team in meeting tight exhibition installation and breakdown deadlines.
  • Perform other reasonable general duties related to exhibition operations.

Working Hours & Operational Requirements

The standard working schedule is 8 hours per day, but exhibition work is dependent on project and venue schedules.

The successful candidate must be willing and available to work:

  • Monday to Friday as required.
  • Weekends when required by operational and exhibition schedules.
  • Night shifts when required for exhibition installations and breakdowns.
  • Early mornings or late finishes depending on venue access times.
  • Additional hours when required by operational demands.
  • At different exhibition venues and client sites.
  • Out-of-province projects when required.

Flexibility is essential as exhibition setup and breakdown schedules are often determined by venue access times and event deadlines.

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous experience as a general worker, labourer, construction assistant or similar role is advantageous.
  • Previous experience in exhibitions, events, construction, shopfitting or similar environments will be advantageous.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual work.
  • Comfortable lifting, carrying and moving materials and equipment.
  • Able to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Willing to learn and assist with different tasks.
  • Good work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work weekends and night shifts when required.
  • Willingness to travel locally and out of province when required.
  • Must have own safety boots suitable for workshop, construction and exhibition-site environments.
  • Willingness to undergo a pre-employment medical examination, at the company's cost.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens or hold a valid South African work permit that authorises them to work in this role.

Advantageous

  • Previous exhibition stand experience.
  • Carpentry or construction experience.
  • Experience assisting carpenters or tradespeople.
  • Basic knowledge of hand or power tools.
  • Shopfitting experience.
  • Event setup or breakdown experience.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • Previous experience working at exhibition centres or event venues.

Safety & PPE

The successful candidate must have their own safety boots suitable for workshop, construction and exhibition-site environments.

Additional PPE will be provided where required by the company, client or venue and in accordance with applicable health and safety requirements.

The employee will be expected to follow all workplace, client and venue health and safety procedures.

What We Offer

  • R350 per day.
  • Performance-based, on-the-spot bonuses awarded for strong individual performance.
  • 3-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position based on performance and operational requirements.
  • Hands-on experience in the exhibition and events industry.
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced carpenters and exhibition professionals.
  • Exposure to different exhibition venues and projects.
  • Opportunities to develop practical skills and experience.

Important Information for Applicants

This is a hands-on support role. The successful candidate will work closely with the carpentry team and assist throughout the exhibition process, including workshop preparation, loading, transportation, installation, setup, dismantling and breakdown.

The role is not exclusively workshop-based. Travel to exhibition venues and client sites is required, including out-of-province travel when operationally necessary.

Due to the nature of exhibition work, weekend work, night shifts, early starts, late finishes and additional hours may be required depending on operational and project requirements.

Applicants must have:

  • Their own safety boots.
  • The flexibility to work according to exhibition and operational schedules.
  • South African citizenship or a valid South African work permit.
