Reports To: Department Supervisor / Team Leader / Manager

Location: Pie in the Sky Bakery, Montague Gardens

Job Purpose:

To provide reliable operational support within the assigned department by performing production, packing, material handling, cleaning, preparation and other general operational activities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), food safety requirements, quality standards, health and safety requirements and production schedules.

The General Worker is expected to contribute to the efficient operation of the department by maintaining productivity, minimising waste and downtime, keeping the work area clean and organised, and supporting the team to achieve daily production requirements.

The employee may be required to perform different tasks within the department according to the daily/weekly allocation of work, production requirements and operational priorities.

Responsibilities:

• Perform assigned operational tasks according to departmental procedures and work instructions.
• Follow the daily/weekly work allocation provided by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
• Move between tasks within the department when required to support operational requirements.
• Maintain an appropriate pace of work to meet departmental productivity requirements.
• Assist colleagues where necessary to maintain workflow and prevent bottlenecks.
• Report operational problems, shortages, delays, defects or equipment problems to the Supervisor/Team Leader.

SOP and Work Instruction Compliance

• Follow all applicable SOPs, work instructions and production procedures.
• Perform tasks according to the prescribed sequence and method.
• Ask for clarification where an instruction or procedure is not understood.
• Never bypass established procedures in order to increase production speed.

Food Safety and Quality

• Maintain good manufacturing practices (GMP) at all times.
• Follow food safety and hygiene requirements.
• Prevent contamination of raw materials, work-in-progress and finished products.
• Identify and report damaged, contaminated or non-conforming products.
• Maintain product integrity during handling, processing and packing.
• Complete required quality or production checks where assigned.
• Ensure that foreign objects and other contamination risks are immediately reported.

Health and Safety

• Comply with all SHEQ policies, procedures and safety instructions.
• Correctly use required PPE.
• Operate only equipment for which the employee has been trained and authorised.
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries and near misses immediately.
• Maintain safe working practices around machinery, conveyors, ovens, freezers and other equipment.
• Keep walkways, emergency exits and work areas clear.

Housekeeping

• Maintain a clean, orderly and hygienic working environment.
• Clean equipment and work areas according to departmental requirements.
• Remove waste and dispose of it in the designated areas.
• Ensure that tools, materials and equipment are returned to their designated locations.
• Participate in cleaning activities at the required intervals.

Materials and Product Handling

• Handle raw materials, packaging materials, work-in-progress and finished products correctly.
• Prevent unnecessary product damage and wastage.
• Ensure materials are used according to the required specifications.
• Report shortages of materials or packaging to the relevant person.

Teamwork and Conduct

• Work cooperatively with colleagues, Supervisors and other departments.
• Maintain good communication during shift handovers and task changes.
• Demonstrate punctuality, reliability and discipline.
• Maintain a professional attitude and comply with company policies and procedures.

Requirements:

• Grade 12

Advantageous:

• Previous experience in a bakery, food manufacturing or FMCG environment.
• Experience working with production equipment.
• Experience working with SOPs.
• Basic understanding of food safety/GMP.
• Previous experience in packing, stores, production or hygiene.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

The role may involve:

• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Repetitive movements.
• Lifting and moving materials/products within safe manual-handling limits.
• Working around moving machinery.
• Exposure to heat in oven/production areas.
• Exposure to cold temperatures in freezer areas.
• Exposure to water and cleaning chemicals in Wash Bay.
• Working in environments where strict hygiene and PPE requirements apply.
• Working early morning, evening, night or weekend shifts depending on production requirements.
