Role Purpose Myriad is looking for a dynamic person who will be keenly invested in protecting and optimising value through disciplined pricing, portfolio stewardship, profitability management, reinsurance oversight and evidence-based commercial decisions.
Working closely with the Head of Product Development, the Head of Pricing will lead Myriad's pricing, product management, commercial analytics, reinsurance and profitability functions to ensure sustainable growth, sound financial performance and long-term portfolio value.
Requirements
- Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA), or an equivalent internationally recognised actuarial fellowship qualification.
- Relevant degree in Actuarial Science or another appropriate quantitative discipline.
- Professional membership in good standing and compliance with applicable professional and continuing professional development requirements.
Experience
- Significant life insurance industry experience, with a deep understanding of life insurance products, pricing, underwriting, claims, reinsurance, profitability drivers and regulatory requirements.
- Extensive pricing and actuarial experience, including pricing methodologies, models, assumption setting, experience investigations, governance and profitability analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in product profitability, portfolio performance, premium reviews, VNB, earnings and financial sustainability management.
- Reinsurance strategy and management experience, including treaty structures, negotiation, performance oversight and partner engagement.
- Experience using business intelligence, commercial analytics and performance insights to inform executive decision-making and strategic business interventions.
- Proven leadership experience, including leading specialist teams, building capability, driving delivery through others and operating through influence across multiple stakeholder groups. Experience leading managers and senior specialists will be advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience operating in senior governance, approval and decision-making forums, providing independent professional challenge, exercising sound judgement and influencing strategic outcomes.
- Experience managing complex commercial, financial and strategic issues, with the ability to balance business growth, customer value, profitability, risk and sustainability considerations.
- A track record of operating successfully within complex organisational environments and representing business interests effectively at senior leadership level.
Technical and business knowledge
- Life insurance product design, pricing and portfolio management.
- Pricing methodologies, assumption setting, experience investigations and model governance.
- Product lifecycle, product approval and pricing approval frameworks.
- Life insurance profitability, VNB, earnings, margins and financial performance drivers.
- Claims, underwriting, persistency etc experience analysis.
- Reinsurance structures, treaty management, risk transfer and capital efficiency.
- Alteration bases, special quotations and bespoke pricing solutions.
- Commercial analytics, business intelligence, data governance and strategic reporting.
- Applicable insurance regulation, conduct requirements, risk management and professional actuarial standards.
- Market dynamics, competitor positioning, customer value and adviser-led distribution.
Duties & Responsibilities Product pricing & pricing governance
- Own and maintain the pricing strategy, methodologies, frameworks, assumptions and pricing models for the product portfolio.
- Establish and maintain model governance, version control, documentation, validation standards, change controls and approval requirements.
- Lead regular pricing reviews to assess pricing adequacy, competitiveness, emerging experience and financial sustainability and management of in-force benefits.
- Provide independent review, challenge and pricing sign-off for new products and material product changes through the approved governance process.
Product profitability & financial performance
- Own portfolio profitability management and provide recommendations that protect earnings, VNB, margins and long-term shareholder value.
- Monitor actual and expected financial performance, identify emerging risks or value leakage and drive corrective interventions.
- Assess the financial implications of product, pricing, discount, benefit and reinsurance decisions.
- Provide commercially grounded input into business planning, forecasts and strategic priorities.
Product management & portfolio stewardship
- Act as custodian of the existing product portfolio from a commercial, financial and sustainability perspective.
- Lead product lifecycle reviews and portfolio optimisation, including product maintenance, support and reviews.
- Ensure product competitiveness, operational effectiveness, regulatory alignment and continued market relevance.
- Own alteration basis methodologies, assumptions and governance.
- Oversee the monitoring and optimisation of product features and benefits, including claims-related initiatives and booster propositions.
Reinsurance management
- Develop and execute the reinsurance strategy in support of growth, profitability, risk appetite and capital efficiency.
- Lead treaty negotiations, renewals, performance reviews and strategic engagement with reinsurance partners.
- Optimise reinsurance structures and monitor the commercial and risk outcomes of arrangements.
- Ensure sound governance, documentation and implementation of reinsurance decisions.
Product Maintenance & Support
- Product support service levels.
- Product query turnaround times.
- Quality and accuracy of technical guidance.
- Successful implementation of maintenance changes.
- Operational effectiveness of the in-force portfolio.
- Stakeholder satisfaction with product support and governance.
Experience monitoring & commercial analytics
- Lead claims, underwriting, persistency, LifeReturns and discount experience monitoring and analysis.
- Identify trends, deviations, emerging risks and opportunities, and translate these into pricing, product or operational action.
- Lead business intelligence and commercial analytics that support growth, profitability improvement and portfolio decisions.
- Develop strategic reporting and dashboards that provide clear visibility of product, experience and financial performance.
Client and stakeholder leadership
- Build trusted relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to enable integrated business solutions and shared outcomes.
- Use market intelligence, external networking and benchmarking to maintain commercial relevance and competitiveness.
- Engage relevant stakeholders to understand changing client, adviser and channel needs and translate these into commercially sustainable recommendations.
- Promote fair customer outcomes by ensuring product and pricing decisions appropriately balance client value, competitiveness, risk and sustainability.
