Job description
Our Civil Engineering Company is seeking to Employ A safety officer is responsible for protecting workers and property by ensuring a workplace is free from hazards and follows safety laws. Their main duties include conducting risk assessments, enforcing safety policies, and investigating workplace accidents.
Inspections and Risk Control
- Inspect workplaces: Walk through job sites or offices to spot unsafe acts, tools, or conditions.
- Assess risks: Find hidden dangers in daily work processes and machinery.
- Stop unsafe work: Halt any dangerous task immediately until it is safe.
- Check PPE: Ensure workers wear and care for personal protective equipment properly.
Rules and Training
- Make policies: Write clear safety rules and emergency evacuation steps.
- Ensure compliance: Keep the company aligned with local occupational health and safety acts and laws.
- Run training: Lead safety inductions, toolbox talks, and first-aid or fire safety classes.
- Educate staff: Teach workers how to use equipment safely and report dangers.
Reports and Response
- Investigate incidents: Look into accidents and near-misses to find root causes.
- Write logs: Keep accurate records of safety audits, injuries, and training logs.
- Advise leaders: Report safety scores and suggest improvements to upper management.
Minimum Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 Certificate: A high school pass is standard for entry into formal diplomas and advanced certificate programs.
- NQF Level 3 or 4 Baseline: Many foundational or occupational certificates require basic literacy, numeracy, or a Grade 10-12 equivalent.
Core Industry Certifications
- SAMTRAC: Offered via Safety Cloud, a widely respected foundational industry standard in South Africa.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC): A globally recognized credential favored for multinational and high-risk environments.
- QCTO Occupational Certificate: National OHS Officer certification aligned with local quality standards.
Professional Registration & Growth
- SAIOSH: Registering with the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (or relevant bodies like SACPCMP for construction) aids career progression.
- Practical Skills: Competence in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), incident investigations, and legal compliance under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
