Health & Safety Officer

Job Title: Health & Safety Officer
Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Health & Safety Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving a strong health and safety culture across multiple sites, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, company policies, and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

As the Health & Safety Officer, you will be responsible for:

Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and all relevant legislation.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and workplace assessments.
  • Compile and maintain annual risk assessments.
  • Conduct routine fire prevention inspections.
  • Ensure all safety signage is correctly displayed.
  • Monitor machinery and equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Promote and maintain excellent housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure Health & Safety Representatives complete monthly inspections.
  • Monitor compliance with municipal by-laws and statutory requirements.

Health & Safety Systems

  • Maintain Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Manage emergency evacuation plans.
  • Coordinate accident and incident investigations.
  • Maintain all Health & Safety registers and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Administration & Reporting

  • Administer Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID/WCA) and RMA claims.
  • Maintain accurate Health & Safety records.
  • Compile weekly and monthly Health & Safety reports.
  • Issue warnings and corrective actions where non-compliance is identified.

Training & Stakeholder Management

  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety awareness campaigns.
  • Coordinate Health & Safety training across the business.
  • Chair quarterly Health & Safety meetings.
  • Support managers and Health & Safety Representatives with compliance initiatives.
  • Ensure contractors and suppliers comply with company Health & Safety standards.
  • Communicate compliance updates to management.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Conduct Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA).
  • Monitor Incident on Duty (IOD) investigations and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate evacuation drills.
  • Arrange annual medical examinations for employees in high-risk roles.
  • Track refresher training and certification for:
  • Forklift Operators
  • Stacker Operators
  • First Aiders
  • Conduct departmental Health & Safety audits.
  • Update legal appointments when organisational structures change.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, you should have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Health & Safety/SHE qualification (advantageous)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Health & Safety Officer
  • Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and SHE legislation
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel and reporting skills
  • Strong technical understanding of workplace safety requirements
  • Valid driver's licence (advantageous)
