Purpose of the Position
The EHS Coordinator will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and managing Health, Safety, and Environmental (EHS) processes across various projects. The role ensures compliance with legislative requirements, client standards, and company objectives, contributing to a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace.
Major Compulsory Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures, and standards in accordance with legislative requirements, client standards, and company objectives.
- Conduct EHS vetting and compliance assessments of contractors and subcontractors before commencement of work.
- Perform site inspections, audits, and compliance assessments to monitor adherence to the OHS Act, regulations, client requirements, and company standards.
- Communicate audit findings, non-conformances, and corrective actions to relevant stakeholders and maintain supporting records.
- Facilitate and participate in employee, contractor, and subcontractor induction training and safety awareness programes.
- Conduct incident, accident, and near-miss investigations and ensure appropriate corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
- Participate in internal and external EHS audits and ensure findings are tracked and closed out within agreed timelines.
- Prepare and submit EHS compliance reports, statistics, and documentation as required by management and clients.
- Maintain EHS records, documentation, registers, and evidence on designated systems and platforms.
- Monitor compliance with environmental requirements, waste management processes, and sustainability initiatives where applicable.
- Support risk assessments, method statement reviews, and implementation of control measures for project activities.
- Promote a positive safety culture through engagement, awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide guidance and support to project teams regarding EHS legislation, standards, and best practices.
- Assist with additional EHS-related duties and projects as assigned.
Required Education / Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Risk Management, or a related field.
- Valid SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
- Registration with a recognized professional body (e.g., SACPCMP CHSO/CHSM) will be advantageous.
- Proven experience in EHS management, preferably within the telecommunications, construction, engineering, or infrastructure industries.
- In-depth knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), applicable regulations, and environmental legislation.
- Experience conducting site inspections, audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
- Strong knowledge of contractor management, compliance monitoring, and safety management systems.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong report-writing, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic EHS reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Working Environment / Conditions
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours when required due to operational, customer, or emergency requirements.
- Frequent site visits to active construction, telecommunications, and operational environments.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of workplace safety, health, and environmental compliance.
