Job Overview

To lead and drive a culture of Health, Safety and Environmental performance across all Gilbarco Veeder Root South Africa operations. Responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of HSE systems, policies, and compliance programs, ensuring adherence to legal, customer, and corporate requirements. The position plays a key role in enabling operational excellence by embedding a proactive safety culture, strengthening leadership capability and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSE policies, programs, and management systems.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable legal, customer, corporate, and ISO management system requirements.
• Champion and embed a proactive safety culture through leadership engagement, risk management, behavioral safety initiatives, and operational support.
• Lead incident reporting, investigation, corrective actions, and the implementation of preventive measures.
• Monitor, analyze, and communicate HSE performance, trends, and objectives to support business decision-making.
• Provide practical HSE guidance and operational support to leaders, employees, contractors, and customers.
• Manage HSE audits, legal compliance processes, and contractor oversight to ensure sustainable compliance and operational excellence.
• Lead and develop local HSE capability, including coaching operational teams, supporting competence development and succession planning.
• Manage HSE-related budgets and resources to deliver business objectives efficiently.
• Act as the primary interface with regulatory authorities, managing inspections, compliance submissions, and responses to enforcement actions.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks, with a focus on high-risk activities, field operations, fleet, and contractor management

Required Skills / Qualifications / Certifications / Tech Stack

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 8–10 years of progressive HSE experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership or management role.
• Strong knowledge of South African health, safety, and environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Registration with SACMP
• Experience supporting high-risk operational environments, including field service, fleet, industrial, mining, and customer sites.
• Demonstrated experience in risk management, incident investigation, contractor management, and compliance auditing.
• Lead Auditor qualification or equivalent audit experience.
• Strong working knowledge and practical implementation experience of ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems).
• Proven ability to implement and drive HSE strategies, culture change initiatives, and continuous improvement programs.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills across all organizational levels.
• Strong communication skillsin written and spoken English, with strong presentation, and stakeholder influencing skills across operational and leadership levels.
• Strong proficiency in modern digital workplace technologies.

Preferable

• Experience with HSE management systems, electronic reporting platforms, and data analytics tools.
• Ability to analyze HSE performance data, identify trends, and translate insights into operational improvements.
• Comfortable working in a digital environment and leveraging technology, automation, and AI-enabled tools to improve HSE performance and efficiency.
