Your Opportunity

The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for planning and effectively implementing, monitoring, and promoting all safety, health, and environment initiatives and programs. The

incumbent must ensure that G7 is legally compliant with all health and safety legislation and that all staff are informed and aware of HSE requirements as well as risks and hazards in the workplace.

The Health & Safety Officer must conduct safety inspections and identify HSE and associated risks, assist in addressing potential problems, plan and manage emergency protocols, as well as coordinate, maintain, and update data and supporting documents for HSE reports.

Role-Specific Responsibilities

Operational HSE:

  • Monitor health and safety risks and hazards in the workplace.
  • Responsible for all safety inspections in the workplace (for example, monitoring noise levels in a warehouse).
  • Assist with the creation and management of health and safety monitoring systems and policies in the workplace.
  • Plan, implement and maintain comprehensive environmental safety and health programs on premises or at project site locations.
  • Plan and execute emergency protocol/procedures (such as fire alarm drills) and organising emergency teams and first aiders.
  • Collaborate with management to develop an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, investigation, and case management.
  • Conduct safety inspections and identify HSE and associated risks. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
  • Guarantee that all work is performed in accordance with approved manuals, internal policies and procedures, contract documents, and good engineering practices.
  • Conduct safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
  • Ensure the business is legally compliant with all health and safety legislation.
  • Responsible for the control of administrative requirements, record keeping and reporting deadlines associated with the function.
  • Develop and implement a safety and fire training and awareness module and organise HSE awareness program.
  • Maintain the costs within budget and assist Senior Managers in preparing yearly budget for HSE function.
  • First aid duties.
  • Keep abreast of developments, legislative changes, emerging trends, and latest technologies in the profession.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Multi-Contractor Governance and Compliance
  • Advise employees on how to minimise or ultimately avoid risks and hazards in the workplace.
  • Provide project management teams with guidance on health and safety and confirm project site fulfils industry, local, national HSE laws and regulations.
  • Offer general health and safety advice to all employees as well as service providers where relevant.
  • Participates in team meetings and provides regular on-site project presence.
  • Work with and train employees to manage, monitor and improve the health and safety standards in the workplace.
  • Plan, implement, and conduct preventative care, safety, and compliance training programs.
  • Work closely with various internal departments as well as external service providers.

Financial Management

  • Provide input into HSE budgets.
  • Monitor and control HSE expenditure.
  • Support cost management and change control.
  • Report budget performance to management.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant Qualification in Health & Safety
  • Registered Construction Health and Safety Manager (CHSM)
  • Registration with SACPCMP
  • First aid and construction safety certifications
  • Minimum 8 years HSE experience
  • At least 5 years in EPC-scale infrastructure or energy projects
  • Proven experience managing multi-contractor sites
  • Please note that applicants from the relevant industry experience will be given preference to (Renewable Energy, IPP, Construction, EPC-scale infrastructure)
