Health & Safety Officer

Xpres is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Health & Safety Officer to manage and monitor occupational health and safety requirements for a 3 months HVAC project.

The project involves repairs and upgrades to rooftop packaged air-conditioning units and associated ducting, with activities including rooftop/work-at-height operations, electrical and mechanical work, lifting and rigging, ductwork installation, refrigerant handling, hot work, testing and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Maintaining and implementing the project Health & Safety File and H&S Plan.
• Conducting daily site inspections and monitoring compliance with project H&S requirements.
• Conducting and reviewing baseline, issue-based and task-specific risk assessments.
• Monitoring working at heights and rooftop activities, including implementation of the Fall Protection Plan.
• Conducting site inductions, toolbox talks and H&S awareness training.
• Monitoring PPE compliance and maintaining relevant registers.
• Ensuring safe electrical isolation and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
• Monitoring lifting, rigging and material-handling operations.
• Controlling hot-work activities and permits.
• Monitoring HVAC/refrigerant work and associated safety requirements.
• Inspecting tools, ladders, fall-protection equipment, lifting equipment and other site equipment.
• Managing incident, near-miss and unsafe-condition reporting and investigations.
• Maintaining statutory appointments, inspection registers, training records and supporting certificates.
• Monitoring subcontractor H&S compliance.
• Attending H&S meetings and liaising with the Project Manager, Client/DPWI representatives and other project stakeholders.
• Preparing the H&S documentation required for project close-out.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should provide:

• Relevant Occupational Health & Safety / Construction Health & Safety qualification.
• Appropriate SACPCMP registration/status, where required for the appointment.
• Experience as a Safety Officer on construction, mechanical, HVAC or similar projects.
• Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
• Experience with safety files, risk assessments, method statements, inspections and incident investigations.
• Knowledge of working at heights, lifting operations, electrical safety, hot work and permit-to-work systems.
• Computer literacy and ability to compile professional H&S reports and registers.
• Valid South African ID/work authorisation and supporting competency certificates.

Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates who are residents of Tonga, Nkomazi Local Municipality and surrounding communities. Applicants should indicate their residential area in their CV/application.
