Job Advert Summary

SAHETI School is an independent, co-educational, English-medium school dedicated to the

pursuit of excellence, while promoting the ethos and values of Hellenism. The school is situated

in Senderwood, Bedfordview.

SAHETI School invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the

position of Head of Department (HOD): Afrikaans – High School. The successful candidate will

provide academic leadership within the Afrikaans Department, ensuring excellence in teaching

and learning while promoting the ethos and values of SAHETI School. The incumbent will be

responsible for curriculum implementation, staff support and development, learner achievement,

and the effective management of departmental responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • An appropriate university degree and recognised professional teaching qualification.
  • Proven teaching experience in Afrikaans at Senior and FET Phase (Grades 8–12).
  • Previous leadership or Head of Department experience will be advantageous.
  • Current and valid SACE and Police clearance certificate.
  • Experience with the IEB curriculum.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong administrative and organisational abilities.
  • High level of computer literacy and the ability to integrate technology into teaching and learning.
  • A dynamic, creative personality with strong leadership qualities.
  • Commitment to the extra-curricular programme of the school.
  • Ability to identify with and uphold the values and ethos of SAHETI School.
  • Ability to teach an additional high school subject will be advantageous.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Afrikaans Department.
  • Develop and implement curriculum plans in line with IEB requirements.
  • Mentor and support Afrikaans educators.
  • Monitor learner performance and implement strategies to improve results.
  • Oversee assessment, moderation, and reporting processes.
  • Ensure effective departmental administration and resource management.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative departmental culture.
  • Participate fully in staff development and school initiatives.

Departmental Governance :

  • Establish and maintain an effective departmental organisational structure;
  • Lead strategic and academic planning, including curriculum development, assessment,

and delivery;

  • Implement and monitor quality assurance processes related to teaching and learning;
  • Allocate staff duties to ensure efficient departmental functioning;
  • Ensure implementation of school policies within the Department;
  • Ensure compliance with IEB policies and mandatory circulars.

Staff Guidance and Performance Management:

  • Support the professional development of staff, including induction and mentoring;
  • Manage personnel matters, including recruitment, performance appraisals, and staff

development;

  • Address staff-related issues, including grievances, in a fair and professional manner;
  • Promote ethical conduct within the Department, including the responsible use of

communication platforms;

  • Encourage staff participation in school events and extra-mural activities.

Financial and Infrastructure Management:

  • Manage the Department’s budget, including planning and monitoring expenditure;
  • Oversee the procurement of teaching resources and materials;
  • Manage and maintain departmental facilities and infrastructure;
  • Ensure compliance with school financial policies and reporting requirements.
